The second round at the 2024 British Open is set to get underway early Friday morning from Royal Troon, which means we have Round 2 picks to bet based on the odds from our best golf betting sites. Englishman Dan Brown sits in the solo lead at 6-under-par, surging up the outright betting market for the latest British Open odds.

Royal Troon showed its teeth in Round 1, creating chaos and challenging most of the outright betting favorites entering the week. Dan Brown, who was as long as 350-1 in the first-round leader betting market, wound up going bogey-free. He sunk his sixth birdie on the 18th hole to secure the outright lead in Round 1 over Shane Lowry.

Scottie Scheffler remains the betting favorite heading into Round 2 after going birdie-bogey-birdie on his final three holes to wind up 1-under and T-11 on the leaderboard. Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele also played well enough to occupy spots in the top five.

Big favorites such as Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, and Ludvig Åberg all fell to 4-over or worse.

Prevailing 10-15 mph winds are forecasted for Round 2, so Royal Troon won’t be playing any easier than we saw Thursday.

Here are our British Open Round 2 odds and picks based on the latest odds from our best sports betting sites (based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

British Open Round 2 picks

Pick confidence rating based on a 1-to-5-star scale.

Scottie Scheffler Under 71.5 round (-125)  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a strong Round 2 prop bet to take on the current betting favorite and World No.1 golfer. Scheffler got behind early in Round 1 with a bogey on the first hole, but he finished strong, sinking two birdies in the final three holes to get to 1-under.

Par 3s were Scheffler’s weakness, going 1-over, but he went 1-under on par 4s and par 5s. He’s still extremely talented tee-to-green and should be able to break even, especially with oddsmakers continuing to value Scheffler as the outright betting favorite at +400.

Let’s stake a unit on Scheffler to break even par at Royal Troon Friday. His debut at this links course gave him plenty to analyze and Scheffler should come out strong, leaning on his driver, irons, and scrambling ability to cash this prop for the second day in a row.

Tony Finau 3-ball matchup (+125) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Finau is paired with Russell Henley and Matthieu Pavon in his 3-ball matchup on Friday. Two birdies and two bogeys led Finau to even par in Round 1, playing better on par 3s and par 5s.

He didn’t record a bogey until the back-nine, playing the front-nine 1-under on Thursday. Now, he’ll need to beat Henley and Pavon on Friday in his 3-ball matchup to cash this Round 2 prop bet.

Henley went 2-under in Round 1, gaining 5.45 strokes, but oddsmakers still value Finau over him in Friday’s 3-ball matchup. Based on how good his ball-striking talent is, we’re likely going to see a couple more birdies converted by Finau in Round 2.

Pavon is the best putter in this group, with Finau being the worst, but Royal Troon rewards ball-striking accuracy quite a bit. The Frenchman ranked 65th on par 4s at 2-over after finishing his round with three bogeys.

Expect Henley to regress to the mean and Finau to improve his play tee-to-green to wind up winning this 3-ball matchup, so let’s stake one more unit on Finau at plus odds.

Tyrrell Hatton Under 71.5 round Score ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hatton was a big betting favorite ahead of Round 1 and he looked sharp through the first 13 holes, making par until back-to-back bogeys on a par 3 and par 4 on the back-nine.

Hatton’s inability to make a birdie should not transfer to Round 2, as he was 40th in strokes gained approach and 18th in strokes gained around the green in Round 1. His putting and off-the-tee metrics were outside of the top 80, but Hatton is a strong putter in most events.

While it was far from a dazzling performance on Thursday, betting on Hatton to go even par on Friday is a strong wager to make at -105 odds. One final unit placed on Hatton to go under 71.5 at Royal Troon, where he previously logged a T-5 finish in 2016, is a sound investment in the Round 2 prop betting market.

How to bet on golf

Betting on golf involves understanding the various types of bets available and how to assess player performance.

First, familiarize yourself with the different types of bets commonly offered in golf. The most popular bets include outright winner bets, each-way bets (which cover both a win and a top finish), head-to-head matchups between two players, and proposition bets on specific events within a tournament.

Once you've identified the types of bets you're interested in, research the players, course conditions, recent form, and other relevant factors that could influence outcomes.

Pay attention to factors like player statistics, recent tournament performances, course history, and any injuries or changes in form that may affect a player's performance.
