My best Virginia Tech vs. Clemson prediction anticipates a low-scoring game in this key ACC matchup. Below, I explain why Clemson's defense should get the better of Virginia Tech's offense, though I expect Clemson's offensive woes to continue, even in a somewhat favorable matchup.

Clemson is favored by 2.5 ahead of Saturday's 7 p.m. ET game at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C. The game will air on ESPN and stream on ESPN Unlimited.

Under 49.5 (-110 via DraftKings)

Even after scoring 37 points against Charleston Southern, Clemson is still averaging just 22.3 points per game, tied for 107th in the nation. The offense has scored at least 20 points in four games this season, but Saturday's performance was the first time it managed to break 30.

Virginia Tech ranks 46th nationally in points allowed per game, giving up just 21.1 per contest. While the Hokies have allowed at least 21 points in five of their seven games and are giving up 24.5 points per game to ACC opponents, Clemson is averaging just 4.88 yards per play, which is tied for 128th in the nation, so I still don't have confidence in the Tigers' ability to move the ball.

📡 SBR Edge: Clemson's red-zone success

While Clemson's red-zone defense is allowing opponents to score on 85.7% of opportunities, Clemson has allowed just 14 red-zone chances all season. Virginia Tech has the third-most red-zone chances in the ACC, but I expect them to have a hard time keeping drives alive against the conference's fourth-best third-down defense.

Clemson's defense has been solid for most of the year

Despite already facing two top-seven scoring offenses, Clemson is still allowing just 21.5 points per game. The Tigers have held two of their three ACC opponents to 20 points or fewer. While neither of those teams is as proficient offensively as Virginia Tech, I still believe in Clemson's defense, especially after it held Miami's offense to just 24 through three quarters.

Virginia Tech is a pass-first offense, averaging 301.6 passing yards per game. However, Clemson is allowing just 189.3 passing yards per game, and the Tigers held Darian Mensah and Miami 106 yards below their season average.
