The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are currently in a tough spot, having endured a five-game losing streak that has brought their season record to 1-5. Notably, three of those defeats came with a margin of 14 points or more, and they have yet to secure a win against an FBS opponent. In Week 6, the Golden Eagles lost a closely contested match to the Old Dominion Monarchs, falling 17-13, despite holding a 13-10 lead heading into the final quarter. Southern Miss is one of just two teams with a winless 0-3 record in Sun Belt play.
In contrast, the South Alabama Jaguars had a strong showing in Week 6, claiming a commanding 55-7 victory over the UL Monroe Warhawks. The Golden Eagles are averaging 356 yards and 20.4 points per game against FBS opponents. They've had outbursts of 36 and 37 points in recent weeks but scored just 13 points last time. Southern Miss has been a favorite in two games along its five-loss losing skid.
The Jaguars defense looks unstoppable when it faces weak offenses. South Alabama has allowed 17 or fewer points in each of its three wins, and as 18-point favorites, it’s clear what the final result of this game should be.
The Jaguars showed with their 55 points last week that they could clear this number themselves, but this game should be a bit slower-paced. The Golden Eagles can’t stop the run and the Jaguars are averaging 157.7 rushing yards per game, which should result in the clock ticking away. We see the final score being in the mid-40s rather than the 50s.
