Ohio looks to remain the only unbeaten team in MAC play when it takes on the conference’s only winless team in Akron, but my Ohio vs. Akron prediction expects a closer game than the records would suggest between these two in-state rivals.

This first game of the Week 10 college football slate kicks off from InfoCision Stadium at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday night (ESPN2). Ohio is a 12.5-point betting favorite.

Akron +12.5 (-110 via FanDuel)

These two Ohio universities are about 180 miles apart, but there’s an even bigger perceived gap between these two programs from a talent perspective, as Ohio has won 16 of the last 17 matchups. Only one of the previous six was decided by fewer than 14 points, but I am happy to be on the contrarian side with the underdogs, as Ohio could be looking ahead to its next game against a 3-1 Miami (OH) squad.

While it may not have the wins to show for it, Akron’s offense has built momentum through the passing game, throwing for 200-plus yards in four straight games, including a high of 275 yards in its last game against Kent State. That speaks to quarterback Brayden Roggow’s continued comfort after appearing in just three games last year and logging a 109.7 efficiency rating.

📡 SBR Edge: Getting on the board first

Akron has a propensity for starting hot, as it has scored the game's first touchdown in five straight.

Red zone efficiency could swing the result

Akron entered its last game against Kent State having scored on 17 of its 19 red-zone possessions (89% conversion rate). That included a 68% touchdown rate, while the Zips held their opponents to a 46% red-zone touchdown rate (11 of 24).

Akron has also been a sort of statistical anomaly this season, totaling 162 first downs, which is six more than its opponents on the season (156). It is a profitable 8-6-1 ATS as a home underdog since 2022, and should be the right side of the spread in this early-week matchup.

Play to: Akron +11.5 (-105)

Score prediction: Ohio 31, Akron 20
