The Oklahoma Sooners faced an offseason of turmoil, but are still the team to beat in the Big 12 while they're in it. Here are the best ways to bet on Oklahoma.

After seeing their six-year reign as Big 12 champions come to an end last season, Oklahoma looks to reclaim the conference crown in one of its final campaign before heading to the SEC. Former defensive coordinator Will Venables returns to Norman in place of departed head coach Lincoln Riley, while transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel has potential to become the Sooners’ newest Heisman winner.

Most sportsbooks are offering the Sooners’ season win total at 9.5 with plus money on the Over, but I’d rather lay a bit of juice to take the flat 9 at MGM (FanDuel is even offering an 8.5, but the Over is heavily juiced at -180.). In order to lose this bet, Oklahoma would need to lose at least four games — something that the Sooners program has done just once since 2009.

Yes, it could take the Sooners some time to adjust to Venables and all the new faces in their lineup, but Oklahoma’s soft early schedule will provide plenty of room for error. OU will open the year with non-conference clashes with UTEP, Kent State, and Nebraska before getting into the meat of the Big 12 season, where it won’t have to visit Oklahoma State, Kansas State, or Baylor.

If you’re feeling a bit bolder about the Sooners’ chances of enjoying a strong season, why not try to triple your money with a 2-to-1 return on Oklahoma winning the Big 12 title?

Venables is more than familiar with the expectations in Norman, having spent 13 years as an OU assistant coach before becoming the defensive coordinator at Clemson. He’s also embracing the massive turnover on this year’s roster, noting that should help the Sooners transition to a new head coach and also remove any sense of entitlement or complacency in this blue blood program.

Transfer quarterback Dillon Gabriel should be especially motivated to put up a big year after a broken collarbone ended his 2021 campaign after just three games. Gabriel enters the year ranked fifth on the Heisman Trophy odds and will have plenty of opportunities to put up big numbers in the high-tempo system of new offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, who Gabriel worked with several years ago at UCF.

Ten wins would give us a strong chance to get to the window against a Cowboys squad that hasn’t won 10 games in consecutive seasons since 1996. On top of playing what should be a tougher division slate against the improved NFC East, the Cowboys also need to visit the Rams, Packers, and Titans this season while hosting the Buccaneers and Bengals.
