The Detroit Red Wings have been in a rebuilding process for a while and might be ready to take the next step in their development, signing forward Andrew Copp to a five-year, $28.125 million contract.

Andrew Copp to the Detroit Red Wings

Copp, 28, has developed into an excellent two-way player in the past couple of seasons, adding more offensive production, including a career-high 53 points (21 G, 32 A) in 72 games with the Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers last season.

A versatile forward who can play center or wing in either a checking or scoring role, Copp should be a good fit on Detroit’s second line. He has won 53.5% of his draws over the past four seasons, so if Copp is going to be the second-line center, he should be able to handle that responsibility.

Copp is a Michigan native who played at the University of Michigan, so it should come as little surprise that he was a primary target for the Red Wings. Even so, the Red Wings managed to get this sought-after free agent signed to a relatively reasonable deal. The price is fine for a second line forward but, more importantly, the term is not outrageous.

The marketplace still appears to believe that the Red Wings will be fighting uphill next season. Their Stanley Cup odds are priced at +5000 on DraftKings, +7000 on FanDuel, and +8000 on Caesars.
