Balls To The Wall: Week of Oct.6
Winding down the season with only about 4 weeks left. Events in Russia, Austria, Indonesia & Sweden this week. Some of these matches are during the night, but it looks like there are more this week that will go off in the early morning hours rather than while we're sleeping!

    ATP - Kremlin Cup

    Chardy -125(Starace)

Two guys here who prefer playing on dirt, but take to the indoor hard surface in Moscow. That should favor Chardy who got a little more experience on the surface last week in France, losing a hard first round match against Tipsarevic. Chardy has at least tried to play on the surface, 21 matches in the past year, while Starace has avoided it like the plague - just one match on the indoor hard court in the last year. And only a handful on hard courts at all in 2008. Chardy should be acclimated to the court better rather than Starace who is coming off a clay court tourney. Chardy must do the job on-serve and avoid double faults (Achilles Heel in losses). He won't be worried by a massive serve like last week, which should allow him time to concentrate on his own serve & the return game. Starace could be getting fatigued as well here at the end of a long season where he has played in 29 tournaments since February. Chardy has played in just 20 during that same span.

    ATP - BA-CA Tennis Trophy

    Ferrero +120(Karlovic)

Ferrero got a tune-up for what he'll see from Karlovic in his last match, a 3 set loss to Andy Roddick. Ferrero did a respectable job on the return vs. A-Rod at 25%, but fell apart on his second serve. He'll need that to improve to pick up the win in this one, but Ferrero did show that perhaps he's healthy & ready to be a threat again with three matches under his belt last week. He'll definitely be the fresher of the two & possesses good value here. Karlovic got let off the hook when Baghdatis got injured last week while he was being dominated. Moya then stayed with him for a straight sets win. Ferrero could do the same.

YES! Glad to see, I've got the same ones. Gonna spend another unit on them.
I also like Canas at +150. Any thoughts on that one?

I had that as one of the four I was looking at. Definitely no way I would take Seppi for the price. I think if Canas can be consistent with his serve, he can win. Good value pick.

Yes, the reason why I liked it so much was because of his match against Acasuso, where he had only 46% first serves but still lost in three. I saw Mannarino twice on tv and he has talent, but still didn't play that outstandig and I don't like the fact, that Seppi made only 35% of his points on 2nd serve.

Yeah I'd say a perfect start

              My picks for tomorrow:
Schwank at +200: Backed it up with three-setter for Simon. Schwank played some great tennis against Stepanek but had some mental problems. If you'd asked me, he was the better player, but lost, because he had some easy errors late in the game and got frustrated when he didn't manage to win the tie break, so he made more easy errors. Simon had recently some success on clay, but didn't perform well against Mahut. I expect this one a close match.

Schüttler at -189: Should be an easy match for Schüttler, Guccione lost against a player, who is ranked 187 and also both matches in davis cup, while Schüttler had some success recently in Asia.

Makarova at -200: Vesnina won only one match since the begin of the hard court season in july and lost the other five, while Makarova was beaten in her last tournaments after two wins by Stosur (who got to the final) and Na Li.

Kohlschreiber at -164: This is a tricky one, since it's his first tournament after his injury. Nevertheless I think, he's gonna win, saw Gicquel against Mannarino, where he was outplayed by Mannarino. In addition Kohlschreiber played doubles today and didn't lose very high against two good doubles players.

Any thoughts on them? (Will play another unit, if you also like one of them )

I got screwed in the Marion Bartoli/Cibulkova match today Mr.Eagles. Those retirement rules got me for the 2nd time in the past week.

Sorry about yooze guys on the withdraw screwjie, it all evens out. I was the benefactor of one last week. Somewhere you'll get one when your player is getting whacked some day.

                    WTA - Kremlin Cup

                    Schiavone -135(Hantuchova)

Closest thing I see to an edge tomorrow. Schiavone just beat Hantuchova a couple weeks back on the hard court in Tokyo, so she should have a little extra confidence. She also won their only career meeting on carpet, way back in 2002. Schiavone also scalped Na Li last week in the 1st round in Beijing before losing to a red hot Zvonareva. Schiavone has some success on the carpet in Moscow as well albeit a few years removed. She made the finals in '05 and the quarters in '04. She's only lost in the 1st round, once in 6 tries here. Hantuchova hasn't beaten anyone ranked higher than Schiavone (23) since Safina back in January. Also looking back at both having played Zvonareva in the last two tourney where Hantuchova got blown off the court in straights. Schiavone took one set to a tie break. Will be tricky, but I'll go with the Italian.

The only one I'd say I "disagree" with is Kohlschreiber and that's strictly from the standpoint for me that I don't know what his stamina/fitness is since this will be his first play since the US Open. Gicquel has been fairly competitive and did okay in France last week. I'd rather take + money there. If Kohlschreiber is healthy though, he's probably the better player.

Schwank's probably worth a shot. The other two are too high priced for me to play singlely.

I might throw some coin down on Johansson in Stockholm at +225. Dude unretired for this tournament. He either needs to get paid or thinks he's healthy. Mahut has played some decent tennis of late, but a returning Swedish hero - if he can shake off the rust - could be nice value here.

Well the morning probably showed why I couldn't find alot of edges that I liked. Upsets aplenty with some large favorites eating it today. So I'd be remiss without playing a little on these two just for the F of it.

                              Reynolds +325(Nalbandian)
                              Johansson +225(Mahut)

Probably go 0 fer, but what the hell.

The biggest two surprises may have been Llodra and Wawrinka losing, ruined a couple of parlays. Still great day for me, made some profit with live betting and went 3-0 on my posted picks, we'll see how Schwank will do.
Also adding a small amount on Bjorkman at +137 against Monaco and played your pick Johansson at +225.

Was quite surprised how easy Kohlschreiber won, Gicquel must have had a really bad day.
Also I was VERY lucky with my Makarova pick. But still, a win is a win.

Nice to see Eagles taking the tennis world by storm.

I out handicapped the gentleman all throughout the French Open until Wimbledon arrived, but such is the nature of the turbulent, hard to predict hard court season.

Neither seemed to want to win, but Schwank won in the 3rd set tie break. Sweet win.

I wasn't going to play it originally, but once I lost my one this morning & Meg's picks were all looking solid, figured it was worth it.
