#3502for possible twitter-news inclusion...sabine lisicki achieved the "perfectly choked set" earlier today...blowing a full 5-0 lead...imagine the concentration required to successfully squander each and every of the many set points she must have had to endure, knowing that if she screwed up and accidentally won just one of them, the milestone would elude her...

Big win for Andy Murray in the race for the Tour Finals. Fought off some match points and then wore Robredo down in the third. I think he moves ahead of Dimitrov into 10th with that win. Still has plenty of work to do to displace Ferrer or Berdych on the back end of the Top 8. I'll have some previews for Japan and China later today on the blog. Tennispig me on Twitter and I'll post 'em up here too.

#3527Preview for Tokyo is on the Blog ... here's the quarter break down. Much obliged if you check the rest out. Twitter me.
ATP Tokyo Quarters Breakdown
Wawrinka Quarter
From a consistency standpoint, Wawrinka is the superior player in this quarter. Dolgopolov is the other seed on the bottom of the quarter. Becker and Nieminen square off in a first round match while French qualifier Herbert and Golubev round out the other 1st round matches. Wawrinka opens against home-standing Tatsuma Ito. Wawrinka has made successive quarterfinal appearances at this tournament and this year looks like he should at least one-up that. Barring injury, I think he’s your guy in this quarter.
Nishikori Quarter
Nishikori comes into Tokyo in solid form with the Kuala Lumpur title under his belt from last week. He opens against Dodig. Anderson is the other seed in this quarter and has a tough 1st rounder against Thiem. Other first round matches here include Soeda against Donald Young and Chardy against Rajeev Ram. This is another quarter that looks fairly straight-forward to me. Nishikori is the talent in this quarter and brings with him both confidence and form.
Raonic Quarter
An interesting quarter with Tsonga as the other seed. Raonic opens against Tomic, while Tsonga draws Przysiezny. This should be a quarterfinal of Tsonga and Raonic. Raonic would have Melzer or Roger-Vasselin to go through second, while Tsonga could see Taro Daniel of Denis Istomin. None of those are in great form, although it should be said that Tsonga is continuing to flounder in his own right. The Frenchman was not sharp in Metz in his loss to David Goffin and has not had a ton of success in Tokyo since 2009. Tsonga has only played twice since then, losing in his first match in 2010 and his second match last year. As boring as it sounds, I think your top seed, Raonic, is the guy who should work through here.
Ferrer Quarter
This is where I expect some upheaval. Ferrer is the 2nd seed and Bautista-Agut is the 6th. Ferrer realistically has a decent draw with Granollers first-up and then Moriya or Steve Johnson. None of those guys would normally be a large threat. But Ferrer has not shown enough lately to think he’ll be able to coast here. If Bautista-Agut can survive Gilles #1 in Simon, he could face Gilles #2 in Muller in the 2nd round. The big server faces Delbonis to open. Muller isn’t going to beat any of the top players, but he won’t be facing a dominant guy in this quarter and that means the serve bot could make a run. I’d take Simon as the surprise if he’s healthy, but Muller could be equally as tough this week. This is again the quarter where I think the upsets could happen. Keep in mind though that Ferrer could sneak through to the quarters at least with his draw, but I just have a hard time with him looking a bit worn late in the season.Comment -

#3535More on the blog ...
ATP Beijing
Djokovic Quarter
There’s a lot of star power in this tournament, so most of the quarters are full of solid players. Djokovic gets Pospisil in his 1st match and has Dimitrov opposite of him in this quarter. Dimitrov awaits the winner of Andujar & Benneteau. With the match-ups laid out, a Djokovic-Dimitrov quarterfinal looks pretty likely. Dimitrov has just the one career win over Djokovic in five meetings to-date. With Djokovic’s stellar record here, it would be tough to go against him. Dimitrov you would think would have some added motivation in the search for points to climb in the rankings, but I don’t really see him as a guy who quite has that yearning for success. I’d expect a battle, but think Djokovic wins the war.
Cilic Quarter
The U.S. Open Champion should have little problem gaining the quarterfinals in this draw. He faces Sousa next and then will likely see Andy Murray in the quarters. Murray has to get past Janowicz first, but then would have an easier time with Kukushkin or Cuevas to follow. This is another spot where it looks like seeds should hold, although Murray may have a little fatigue to work through after the tournament last week. Still, a Cilic-Murray QF seems most likely. At that point, I think Cilic has the weaponry to push past Murray and the Scot might be fine with notching some points and getting some rest.
Berdych Quarter
Things get more interesting in the bottom half of the draw. Berdych plays opposite of Isner in this quarter. As outlined, neither should feel like they are a lock to even escape the opening round. I’d give Isner a better shot though and do think Berdych’s motivation and energy level seem pretty low entering the week. Isner would face Robredo or Seppi in the 2nd round. Robredo looked pretty solid in Shenzhen last week, but he may well be fatigued coming off the Finals loss. Robredo seemed to have some trouble with the heat & humidity combination at times. Whomever survives the Berdych-Lopez clash, it’s Troicki awaiting the winner. Either one should be considered Troicki’s biggest test in his comeback as he pieces together a rankings run to end 2014. Motivation is extremely high for him and I would not rule out a win for him in that spot. This quarter to me feels very open. I think it’s one Isner could take advantage of to get himself into the semis. He’s got beatable players on top and may have work done for him on the bottom of the quarter. Also keep an eye on Lopez if he knocks off Berdych.
Nadal Quarter
The names this quarter are probably bigger than their perspective chances of running deep. Gasquet and Gulbis, I’m looking at you. Gasquet likely will not survive Nadal’s first match back. Gulbis as the seed opposite Nadal may not survive his 1st round encounter with Fognini. Your other fodder in this quarter sees Klizan take on Leonardo Mayer wth the winner getting the Gulbis-Fognini winner and Gojowwczyk battling Ivo Karlovic. The winner advancing to take on Nadal or Gasquet. Klizan could be worth the price of admission, especially if he advances to play fellow basket case Gulbis or Fognin. Remember it was Klizan who just sat down and quit his match last week against Troicki in Shenzhen when a couple of calls went against him. Seeing either match-up could be magical for meltdown fantatics. As for the quarter, I think it’s Nadal’s to lose. He’ll be out to prove a point, it’s merely a question of whether his body will let him. Do watch out for that potential 2nd rounder though if Karlovic is there. Even though Dr.Ivo has fallen off some in recent months, that serve can do a lot of things when it’s at an A+ level to pull off an upset.Comment
