Max being a bitch about it and never coming back like he never existed DOES surprise me.

That I agree with. He obviously knew nothing about bookmaking and underestimated his clients, but that he wouldn't even make an effort to face the end of his business in an honorable way surprised me too.

And he didn't "lose his job," he lost his business. There's a huge difference in terms of the responsibilities one has to those who one has represented oneself as trustworthy.
