I really like him. If I woke up to the news he was dead I would be sad, but wouldn't be surprised.

Two EXPERIENCED climbers died at El Capitan recently. When Alex free-soloed El Capitan...it HAD TO be a death probability of 4% or more. Think about that.

If I had to list my "Top 5 Most Interesting Men in the World"...think this would be my list (off the top of my head):
*Alex Hannold, rock climber
*Rob Gronkowski, NFL football player (now retired)
*Mick Jagger, Rock singer
*Laird Hamilton, surfer and fitness enthusiast
*Rocco Siffredi, adult film star
Sure I'm forgetting someone:
1) I read that Hannold did in fact take a serious fall earlier in his career. Suffered injuries but really could have died. I imagine he has to check the weather reports closely. Imagine being on the side of a cliff when a thunderstorm opens up.
2) Gronkowski has been a free spirit that even Tom Brady admires. On field, was unstoppable and gave up his body for the cause. At his peak one of the top PLAYERS in the league (at any position), will go down as one of the three best Tight Ends ever. Was also respected as a teammate. They knew he was working his ass off and would deflect attention in interviews.
3) Jagger has been the front-man of one of the top-selling rock bands in the world. Has done it over an extended period of time.
4) Hamilton is married to a model/pro athlete. Job description is "Surf's up in Australia. Let's fly in and do it." Not sure how active he is anymore. Has aged well.
5) What more needs to be said about Rocco? Guy has unapologetically lived life on his terms. Made good bank in an industry where the most actors work for $400 per shoot. He scoffs at the concept of being monogamous. As if it's the most laughable concept ever.

I think Hannold is a very interesting case study. Completed climbs that most in the community viewed as impossible.

The face of Yosemite is a beautiful thing.
Being frivolous, but I think Captain Kirk was climbing it untethered; and Spock had to appear with an anti-gravity suit.

Bump. I do like this thread. If "Most Interesting Man" isn't the best description...then maybe GOT THE MOST ENJOYMENT OUT OF LIFE might be better.
Been trying to read up on Honnold:
1) Guy has made some bank. I see his estimated Net Worth at $2Mill.
2) Probably doesn't have to climb anymore, if he doesn't want to.
3) Surpised that his height is listed as 5'10". I viewed him as a taller more angular guy.

Also, IF Honnold is still climbing, what % chance do you put him dying as a result of Climbing? 40%?
I mean, his skill-level is up there with the best ever. When climbing, he's as cool as can be. But even Alex has had some close calls.
Study the history of the daredevils. The rock-climbers, the sky-divers, the astronauts, etc. The percentages catch up to them over time.
The mortality is often a result of their daredevil acts. Evil Knievel is an exception, died of natural causes. Wonder how many times he was CLOSE to death.

Kind of like Steven Irvin, the crocodile hunter guy who got killed by a stingray. Was sad to see him die but not exactly shocking news.

Exactly, Foxx. A guy can live and dodge for a certain time.
Over time, the probabilities add up. Possibly the top climber from generation b4 Alex was John Bachar.
Watched some of his videos. He was still climbing after age 50. Odds caught up to him:
