Bill Simmons, shown in this photo courtesy of Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office. By Jim Six and Joe Green / nj.com/south HARRISON TWP.— Twice as the legendary Bill “El Wingador” Simmons rumbled into the Wells Fargo Center for the Wing Bowl, Mary Shiveler of Mantua Township accompanied him.
Shiveler, while not a Wingette, was part of the entourage in 2010 and 2011 to escort El Wingador’s float in opening the beer-drenched, confetti and cleavage-ridden event.
Twice, and for a short time, she was with the five-time Wing Bowl champ, wing-eating’s equivalent of Hulk Hogan, as he soaked up the adoration.
That’s why she was shocked to learn that on Friday, Simmons was arrested and charged with first-degree cocaine distribution.
The New Jersey State Police arrested Simmons, 50, of Woodbury Heights, during a vehicle stop in Harrison Township Friday night, said NJSP Lt. Stephen Jones.
The stop was prompted by a month-long investigation conducted by the NJSP and the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, Jones said.
Using search warrants, police seized approximately $8,000 worth of cocaine, about $4,000 in cash and the Kia Soul — wrapped in colorful El Wingador graphics — that Simmons was driving.
Simmons was lodged in the Gloucester County Jail in Woodbury in default of $100,000 full-cash bail, said Jones.
State police and county detectives executed search warrants at the Woodbury Heights home Simmons owns and the borough residence where he’s been staying, said Jones.
Some cocaine and cash were found in his possession, in the car and in his home, Jones said.
Shiveler said she would never have guessed the towering, bleach-blonde Simmons would be in such trouble. She met him through several friends, she said.
“He was really a polite person,” Shiveler recalled. “But it could be hard to talk to him because there were always lots of people around him.”
