Swimming and Track/field have sooooo many medals. Any country that wants to take down USA in overall medal and gold pretty much has to excel in these or dominate every other event pretty much there is.

Swimming has 30+ gold medals possible (USA secured 16) >80 total medals possible

Track and field 30+ gold medals possible (USA secured 9), >90 total medals possible.
