In general I agree with you, and it cannot be denied that the biggest perpetrators of these actions are black men, but I don't know if we can blame it all on the hip hop culture (whatever that means).

Fighting is necessary in hockey, if you didn't have it the abuses with the sticks would be out of control. Hockey is a very emotional sport, and every person on the ice is carrying a weapon with them, the refs can't control everything, there needs to be some way for the players to police themselves.

Watch the highlight shows. This is sadly what the fan desires to see. If the cameras would stop replaying the actions and ESPN, FOX etc would stop showing it for highlights instead of plays then you would not see it. I personally did not see anything wrong with TO's Usain Bolt impression last week, but I know I have seen it at least 10 times since the play occurred on highlights.

The main concern for the leagues is to overcharge for their bogus product. Not who wins or shows sportsmanship. They believe excessive celebrating and fighting( in hockey mistakingly) excites the moronic fans. We're not smart enough to appreciate the fine points of the game. But we love all the stupid extras.
Why else would we pay $100+ to see a game or care?

Anybody born in da 70's is part of that MTV Genre, so self respect and some humility is no longer appreciated. NFL was pretty bad before, but it's gotten a little bit better.

Some of the most ridiculous moments I ever seen was the Joe Horn Cell phone thing, Saint's doing the leap frog after a TD years ago, and the late Fred Lane doing the worm after a TD while his team was getting their @sses hand to them.

Overall though, I think it's just entertainment and something you should expect that won't ever change given the MTV/WWF era were living in.

Fighting in pucks is what makes the NHL great. Now I do realize the league frowns apon that sorta stuff, however they also understand that it's part of the game and would never put a ban on it. However, it's still the only league where teams shake hands after a playoff series ends.
