How to get a local bookie to take bets
Guys, I'm trying out my first local bookie. Problem is, for whatever reason he won't take me right now because I want to start betting hockey and it's "too much work" for him to take me on right now. He wants a break from the consistent betting and it's died down quite a bit since football ended. WTF is this garbage? Do I really have to wait until football starts up? Anyone run into bookies who like the down time after football?

I've heard of locals who won't answer their phone for a week at a time but never one who says flat out 'I dont want your action.'

Ask him straight up if he knows someone who can take hockey bets. He does.

Sounds like you found a bubble gum bookmaker.

Real Bookmakers are always happy to get Hockey action.

he is small potatoes and would probably have trouble paying you if you hit him hard one week

                move on

Guy is either green, greedy, low bank roll or just does not want your action from you for whatever reason. If it is the last it could be someone said something bad about you or you had weak references or you have skill and he was told. The others have to do with the fact that if he is going to give you action on hockey then he also will feel obligated to offer college and pro hoops, and baseball. Both are possible money losers for him... he may just want the easy money from pro football. When it comes to soccer no one has a problem of saying no soccer, period. The pro football season was also hard on alot of servicesand bookies this season and he just might not feel he can safely bankroll off season action and does not want to take the risk. By hey, he is a local and can do what he wants. There are plenty of them so just go find another, and at this point I would not get action with him if I were you even if he changed his mind. This is done.

My local doesn't take action after the superbowl until March madness. Supposedly he goes golfing in AZ. He's always paid on time so I just take it easy for the month and get my "fix" betting SBR pts.

Lots of books only work during football season, for many different reasons.

I know a local who stopped taking action from a dude cause he lost so much. They knew each other on a somewhat personal level (have mutual friends) type of situation though so maybe thats why.

Bookies not taking on mid or low season milwaukeemike... absolutely. Hell, there is a popular if not famous service that everyone knows on this forum that basically requires customers to put in pro football season action to get off season action. They do this in a not so obvious way by making it a requirement to qualify for basically all of their special contests and promotions and special deposit perks. It is suttle but means exactly the same thing. If you dont play for football we dont want your business... It is a sound practice though and just makes me feel more comfortable about their long term solvency. This particular service probably will have the longest, safest business lifespan for servicing North American customers compared to any other service bar none.

this might be true. But almost all new clients are referrals so they would just ask the buddy to vouch for him or if it's big money make him post up.

I have known at least 20 locals and none of them would turn down bets from a new guy in the middle of football season - they would find a way.

the guys I have known are small potatoes, but I find it hard to believe that "most" bookies would do something that I have seen 0/20 do

Good post, and nice to see someone who actually knows what the hell they are talking about concerning traditional betting with a local. Any bookie worth a salt is not action averse. They will even take some guy's action that they just met without referal....IT IS CALLED POSTUP.

Also, the way a bad local will most often screw you is to not pick up the phone when you are in the middle of a good run...if this starts to happen, settle up, and never use him again.

The thought is you are either a scammer who owes somebody or a price trader for moneyline markets and somebody owes you. Few rec locals make money booking the 10% of guys who hang around to bet the sports that aren't popular in Vegas.
