The "deficit" is the difference between spending and income... so by raising taxes you raise income and make the deficit smaller... (assuming you don't raise spending as well)

But you're wrong about 64% of the stimulus being tax raises. We used borrowed money for 100% of the stimulus, so it just added to the debt and deficit. It made the deficit larger, but not because taxes were raised - it made the deficit larger because taxes were lowered. It sounds like you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how taxes and spending work.

Well, they have bought into the tired old line of "they are the job creators". I owned a business and no amount of tax breaks were gonna get me new customers. Money in peoples pockets were gonna get me the customers. This the eno-con thinkers haveyet to figure out.
