TIP for those visiting VEGAS.........$20 TRICK

Here's how it works:

Fold a $20 bill in quarters (in half lengthwise and again) and put it under your CC at the check in desk. Leave it sticking out a bit so the clerk can see it. When you present your card for check in, you slide it forward a bit with the twenty and say "Are there any upgrades available?".

Theoretically they will see the money, take the card and the bill, say "Certainly Sir/Maam, let me see what I can do for you." and give you the best room in the place.


Stay thirsty my friends, and drink plenty of water when visiting Vegas, it's dry out in these parts.

JJ, next time you visit Vegas, have a compled 2200 sq ft room for you at a very well known and classy strip hotel.....................ENJOY.

My nephew had it for one night a few weeks back and it makes the room you had at the ENCORE look very average............and small.

I've heard stories where they take the $20 and tell you no... Now you'r Fd...

when they ask me for my license I always have a wad of $20's in my hand and then ask "Do you have any complimentary upgrades available?" ... they know the deal... and won't take my $20 until they do something about it...

Key is emphasis the wad is something you will be using for gratitude... without flaunting it of course...wad can be a couple of hundred in $20's...

In Croatia after the war Uncle and I drove from Italy and the cop basically asked how much does my uncle have on some bullshit speed spot (downhill)...

its a known practice

last trip out the clerk didn't even hide the fact i gave him the money

it was a 50 and when i went to walk away he asks loud enough for the other clerks to hear if i needed change from the 50

Because those rooms won't get booked and they get no money... and like you said the clerk gets the money not the hotel...


I've been to Vegas twice now, first weekend of NCAA BB tourney and it has worked both times.. First time was at Mandalay Bay, we were booked to stay in a regular room at MB Thursday to Sunday for 100 a night. I had doubts about it working but heard they just give you your money back if they say no. We gave the girl at Mandalay 50 in between CC and license she looked around on the computer for a couple of minutes and told us if we wanted to wait to check in and go to the room (just a couple of hours) she could upgrade us to Mandalay Bay The Hotel.. If you've ever stayed there you know this was def worth the 50. Those rooms were like 300-400 a night for that weekend and we stayed there for 100 a night.

Then last year we stayed at MGM signature thursday to sunday but all the rooms are the same there so obviously didn't try. But me and a friend were staying Sunday night cause we got cheap flights out on Monday. We had a Hollywood hip room at Planet Hollywood (basic room). We checked in real early so I figured I'd try it out, gave the girl a 20 since it was only for 1 night. She said she would look and then said the room wouldn't be ready for a few hours but she thought she found something. We said that was fine and I figured she would just give us a strip view or something but she flipped through the book of rooms and didn't stop till the last page. She gave us the Panorama Suite with the connector room for the night for a $20 tip. Best room I've ever stayed in. 1750 sq ft room with panoramic views of the strip (facing MGM).


Best trick there is in Vegas... I will without a doubt try it every time I go and will probably try another one night stay at Planet Hollywood if the opportunity presents itself. The one suggestion I do have is to find a younger female at the check in desk, they seem to be the best to deal with.

Doesn't just work in Vegas. I've done it in Tunica and Biloxi also. You don't even have to be subtle, I ask for an upgrade or suite while I'm moving around an unfolded $20 on the desk in front of them and it works.

As far as bribing cops, one time I was in a real scary situation between Vegas and Lake Tahoe.
I was spending a couple of weeks out west gambling and mostly playing poker. I decided to rent a car from Vegas and drive up to Reno/Lake Tahoe because I had never been. On the way back I got stopped for speeding.

If you have never been in the area between Vegas and Tahoe, it is beyond desolate. Being from the east coast the terrain was something I had never seen before except in a road runner cartoon, and there was no cell phone service, no other cars for 20-30 minutes at a time. Very uneasy feeling. Then I come over a bit of a hill and get nailed by two cops in an SUV.

I pull over and he asks for my license and reg., and when I tell him it's a rental he asks for the rental papers. When I take my license out of my pocket I also take out about $2500 in cash. Before I can turn to give him my license he says, "Why are you carrying so much money?" Now I'm not sure if he wants some of it, or he thinks I'm some drug dealer, and I'm thinking a bribe might be in order, but might also get me buried in the desert in the middle of nowhere if I play it wrong either way. May sound paranoid, but if you ever drive in that area it can make you paranoid. I tell him I've been gambling, and he demands to see the car rental papers. He then asks why I made a rental contract that allows me to drive in 4 states. I tell him I don't know, that's just what they signed me up for. Now I realize he thinks I'm running drugs, and I voluntarily tell him I don't do drugs. He says, "Yeah ok, but have you ever transported drugs?" I tell him no, and he can search the car.

I'm sitting out there for at least half an hour while I'm guessing they do a background check, or maybe deciding what to do with me, and finally he writes me a ticket and let's me go. The next town I come to is Tonopah, which I have no interest in ever visiting again, but it was a big relief at the time.

I've gotten numerous upgrades in Vegas by simply asking and not being a total jackass. I always tip the front desk people anyway unless they are completely inept.

I was at THE Hotel a few weeks ago and a girl actually refused my 20 even after I had my room keys for a basic room that I had booked. It set the weekend into a jinxed spiral immediately.

i've never tried it, probably won't ever. camera's are watching the front desk too. might look shady, especially if the person is not competent enough to get the money in their pocket in a slick way. also, i only get a hotel room so i have somewhere to take a sh!t and a nap so i don't care about a big room upgrade.
