Georgia has being oppressing the ossetians big time, to the degree of human rights questions and was one of the primary reasons they were not accepted to NATO earlier this year.

We have been advocating the split of former e. block countries into their political and ethnic counter parts.

Russia for a near perfect analogy is doing exactly what we did in Yugoslavia, helping the people that they agree with break off....

We really don't have a historical or ethical leg to stand on to say give S. Ossetia back.

We do have a right to intervene to keep them out of the Georgian capitol if Georgia asks us too.

If Georgia was a member of NATO we would already be at war with Russia or this would not have happened.

In the end this is Russia asserting its dominance of smaller neighbors saying "Bitch behave" For the most part Russia really hasn't done anything we wouldn't do given the proper political motivation.

Russian convoy moves deeper inside Georgia: By James Kilner

IGOETI, Georgia (Reuters) - A Russian military convoy advanced to within 55 km (34 miles) of Tbilisi on Friday, a Reuters witness said, in the deepest incursion since conflict with Georgia erupted last week.

The advance by some 17 armored personnel carriers (APCs) and about 200 soldiers coincided with a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to secure Georgia's signature on a French-brokered peace plan to end the fighting.

Initially 10 APCs moved along the main highway from the Russian-occupied town of Gori, 25 km (15 miles) from breakaway South Ossetia, before stopping in the village of Igoeti. Several APCs headed down side roads and seven more arrived later.

The exact mission of the incursion was not clear.

Maybe because sports bettors, those who are going to survive in a tough game, do a kind of natural selection: the ones with fewer connected gray cells in the attic - those who can see only the often deceoptively obvious - tend to weed themselves out.

The ones who can think for themselves and not be easily brainwashed tend to survive, and perhaps hang more than the ordiinary joes on boards like this.
