I will tell you guys this much. when I was in college I was a bookmaker. Had a lock on the entire campus. There were several athletes that bet w/ me including the punter of the football team who later had a cup of tea in the major leagues. The starting shortstop of the baseball team also bet w/ me & the starting shooting guard on the basketball team as well.
I eventually became friends w/ the shooting guard. One day myself & booking partners approached him joking around about possibly shaving. He bet & understood exactly how it worked. He wanted in & was willing to do what was necessary. We met several times & eventually came to the conclusion that we needed the services of the point guard to effectively pull this off. The point guard was the best player on the team & later spent 10+ years in the NBA. We approached the point guard & presented our plan. He was interested & wanted to think about it. He later correctly concluded that he had a future in the NBA & didn't think it would be smart to jeopardize that so he promised to forget the conversation ever happened. After that day we gave UP & never pursued it again.
The moral to the story is that I know first hand how close we were to actually pulling that off. It didn't take much persuasion. We were a point guard away from making history. If three college kids that don't have a clue what they're doing can get that close to the starting pg & starting sg on the basketball team I can guarantee you that people that do have a clue what they're doing can get closer.
I don't think point shaving is rampant but I am certain it goes on. The secret is too simply be on the right side when it does.

It's a dog eat dog world. Most of these athletes aren't going pro and they not above doing what they can to shave points. I don't know if the story is true or not but when you have watched as many games as I have you can pick the games that look shady. Anyone who thinks sports are not "fixed" in some way is fooling yourself. NFL have referees have so much flexibility in their calls it's almost a sin! It's like interpreting a law in court, and don't most of you sit there and argue about the calls they do make?? You can make a compelling argument for BOTH sides. Whoever can argue the best wins...............just like court.
