$25-30K. I'm a spendthrift who uses coupons, so I can make a dollar go a long way. No car payments. Buy clothes at thrift stores. I stopped trying to impress people after I said, "I do.".

Um depends what you want to do and if you have bills. For instance if you rent for 800 a month(9600), have no car payment. You food and utilities for the year will prabably be under 8,000 a year. Say yo then have 1,000 to blow a month. And a extra 500 a month for miscelaneous....

Thats 35,000 a month to live comfortably( not extravagent), and have 1500 a month to blow. This is assuming 35,000 tax free of course.

Living comfortably from one person to the next will differ tremendously. I would venture to say someone who is younger with less debt and responsibility could make it with 25k/yr. Obviously those with more than on mouth to feed would need more. I would say the minimum would be 35k. This is a loaded question with many many things to factor in. I could imagine that some folks could live on far less while others would need far more to live without too many worries. You mention 12 months and generally speaking there are several ways to make the most of the above mentioned amounts. For example anyone with decent credit in a financial bind or with limited income could defer certain monthly obligations at least once if not twice in 12 months. Are you refering to a 12 month senario due to unforeseen circumstances or refering to someone's annual income??? Annually most people would need much more to live "comfortably"

I think it depends on the cost of living wherever you are.

There are places around the world I could live off (not including rent) for 20-30K a year.

I probably would not want to live anywhere in a capital city in Australia for less than 60K a year (again, not including rent/mortgage, which would be about $35K).

There are times, when one needs to get away. If I were to write a book or do some intensive research on my own, this would be the place.

Tuition is a little more expensive here (depending on where you go), as is rent.

Depends on where you live (Vietnam? Japan? Paris?) and your marital status. (Wife, Children etc)

40-50k should be enough for a comfortable living. (Assuming you have your own house, no rent)

Make it x4 if you have 2 children. (x1 multiplier for each children)

Who's paying your health insurance? A lot of people can live on little money, but all the best planning in the world doesn't account for $1,000 to put a crown on a tooth, prescription drugs for your high cholesterol, a trip to the ER, etc., etc.

To me now, being comfortable is owning the nice roof over my head, having a decent ride, staying debt free with all of my bills kept up on, fuk around cash to go out and enjoy nice things without thinking twice about what it costs and putting some away for future savings. That will run 5 to 7k a month. Add in family and the number could go up a lot. I know I could get by on 30k a year or so without a problem but I'm happier with full pockets than light ones.

health insurance is a huge cost for a family. Like JJ said here in New Jersey you will need 70,000-80,000 to live a comfortable life here. You can get by with 40 grand, just wont have much savings, or money just in case of emergency
