a personal statement is probably the most important part of the application process. a successful personal statement can spin a unique story in a way where you implicitly convey your personality/character/heritage/etc without actually stating it, just alluding to it through a creative means. The goal is to find an angle and tell a story that does not include elements of the rest of your application (gpa, scores, leadership, clubs).

So AZ, while many people do pick a topic about law to write about, this is not the angle to take to get into a top tier university. Economic issues? Also not the way to go if your shooting for those schools. While the writing style is extremely important, they are also looking for numerous other qualities in your essay, your story. Does your statement demonstrate your perseverance? your humility? your passion for something? They are looking for these qualities without you actually stating them.
