Best GM, I don't know about that. I don't think that he can ever be considered the best GM because he has so much margin for error. I don't think we will ever know how good or not Cashman really is.

Considering he has the biggest budget in the league, not just for salaries but everything (scouting, bonuses, draft, international players), I don't think he has done that great of a job.

Cashman is in a 'no win' siutuation. If they win the title, they were supposed to because they spent more. if they don't, it's his fault because he had so much money to spend and didn't do it correctly.

I like to laugh at the critics ... 26 championships, 6 in my lifetime thus far ... and 14 years in a row in the playoffs ...

Let's look at the other big spenders ...

        Orioles
        Mets
        Red Sox

Combined WS victories since 1976 ...

        (take a guess, kids)

You guys obviously don't follow farm systems much. Ryan, Carl Pavano and Randy Johnson were not Cashman moves. They were executed by Geroge Steinbrenner. After the failures of those moves, Steinbrenner started trusting Cashman more and as a result the Yanks have been a better team.

Btw, this game is far from over.

I don't know if we can fairly judge Cashman because of Steinbrenner, but I think they need to spend money in between seasons on free agents instead of waiting until the trade deadline to decide what holes they need to fill. His free agent pickups have been piss poor.

He is also in a no lose situation, he has all the resources to acquire almost any player he wants. Right now the Yankees are a very old team, they really need to turn the roster over. We will see how Cashman executes that.

Omar Minaya is a horrible GM, I don't know how he is still employed.

Right now the Red Sox are in a reasonably close situation as the Yankees, although I think the pitching for the future is better for the Red Sox.

Now that the Orioles have someone who knows what they are doing in the front office, I think they turn it around.

Element, he is in a great situation from a GM point of view and a horrible situation from a fan perspective point of view. I am sure he has no problem with that.

The Yankee farm system is flooding with young talent from all of the times the Yanks have failed to get a trade executed. Their pitching will only get better as the years go on.

They have a good farm system, but how many of those prospects will be given a chance. The organization seems to fairly quick at giving up on prospects.

Throw me in a suit and give me the largest payroll in the league to work with, and if after so many seasons I can't give the fans anything at all to look forward to, then I'll consider myself a failure.

Seriously dude. You don't even know how much work Cashman does. I have a friend who used to intern for the Yanks and Cashman rarely takes a vacation. He is constantly doing research. Being a GM isn't easy at all. It is even tougher to be the GM of the Yankees because you are expected to win the World Series every year. It's not like the Yankees are the only team with money. Plenty of teams can find ways to raise money to buy players. True, the Yanks have more than any other team. But you have to realize that claiming players is more than just a matter of money since the free agent market isn't very good. Nowadays, Prospects go a longer way in getting top players.

Every time the Yanks struggle, the Steinbrenners threaten to fire Cashman. Thats another reason why being the Yanks GM is tough. If you screw up at all, the Steinbrenners will fire you.

From now on Ponson is a fade play for me (if he stays in the rotation tho)...
The Sox got a great lineup, but who is dumb enough throwing every pitch at the same location vs Ortiz???
