A lot of countries are experiencing or will experience large segments of their population being represented by senior citizens. U.S., Canada, and China, to name several. Countries where the population is expected to explode are in the poorest regions of the world. Some interesting trends, which don't get much media recognition, is that countries are already leasing land for agricultural purposes in poorer countries that are hard up for cash. I see more food disasters looming in the near future, as food producing countries are likely to continue to freeze food exports when experiencing crises at home. Russia's freeze on grain exports is a perfect example of what to expect and hopefully, people will wise up and get away from Ethanol energy use.Comment -

The problem with this whole discussion is that it is assuming that overpopulation is going to be a major problem in the U.S. and in other notable post industrial countries. The real overpopulation problems will occur in parts of the world that don't give two sh its. So it does not matter whether Americans, Canadians, Europeans decide to not have kids in order to east the population expectancies, because the real problems are outside these borders. Again, review the aging population issues that post-industrial players will be facing and then look at the population booms that are occurring in countries that have large percentages of the population living below the global poverty line.Comment -

I am certainly no dirty hippy, but well done on making assumptions about me with no basis other than three posts.
The OP asked if in YOUR opinion do we need more or less people and a lot of people are calling for less people, which by definition means people have to die or be denied to right to have children. What I am asking is that people who take this position offer some strong evidence for the basis of this opinion because, consider it "dirty hippy" talk or whatever other slogan you want to parrot at me, that is a pretty fuqqin strong position to take.
The notion of overpopulation relies on some complex assumptions if you analyse it logically and not emotionally. It relies on a definition of standard of living, e.g. can the world support the same number of ttwarrior's at 600lbs as it could individuals who consume less? It also then requires a strong analysis of resources, available and future, patterns of life and thousands of extremely complex variables... noone has ever done a detailed study of these to offer a number that the world can sustain, in fact lots of previous studies of sustainability have been proved wrong. So to just flippantly say "kill 3 billion people and problems will be solved" with no evidence is not the way to go.. if you can prove it is then fair enough, but noone has yet.
I am not going to offer the Venus project as a solution for anything, I am not trying to present solutions, I am just trying to point out that the idea of overpopulation has and is being used by people to make us think that death is a good thing, which it is not and it has been being used for centuries, when there where billions less people on this planet the same arguments were being used.
For those of you calling out famine as a reason for lowering population, do some research into the history of revolutions - agricultural, industrial and medical. Britain was the first country to go through an agricultural revolution in the 1700's, the techniques this produced allowed smaller numbers of people to create larger numbers of food. This freed up labor and energy for the industrial revolution which in turn increased wealth and discovery which fueled the medical revolution. Britain in the 1700's had the food supplies and the wealth to support the increased population that the medical revolution and the increased conditions of sanitation fueled.
The agricultural revolution spread to Western Europe and Central Europe, it was DELIBERATELY exported to the US with the medical and industrial revolution so that the US would have food to feed the population growth that results in increased sanitation, wealth and medical care.
The agricultural revolution was NOT exported to China, India and Africa and they are still yet to go through an agricultural revolution, however medical, industrial and technological revolutions were, so they experienced the population booms associated with these without the food needed to support them and that is the reason they have famines etc when they have plenty of arable land, this was planned.
I do not care for conspiracies and things I cannot research, frankly I don't know enough about the venus project and resource based economies to comment on them... but I DO know about history and I do know about events that have occured and why they have occured and I am fully aware of the myth of overpopulation and why and who it benefits to push it...Comment -

It requires a reproduction rate of over 2.1 to just maintain a culture, when it falls below about 1.7 it is pretty much impossible to maintain a culture. In other words that culture is going to go, vanish from the face of the Earth.There is truth to what you have said. It is also irrelevant. You are stating a case on how we can be more efficient to increase the standard of living, which is true, we could improve on this. Problem is that's not the question. The question posed by the OP (which was a waste of a thread by the way) is "does the world need more or less people". No matter how we "manage" our population there is no scenario where adding people would make it better for the Earth. So we all become more efficient, use less natural resources, plan better, etc, etc. Now you want to add more people? That would be like Coca-Cola advertising they just cut the sugar content of there soda in half but with the same great taste.....so now you can drink 2 cans instead of just 1. WTF? You're right back where you started. There is no scenario where it would be BENEFECIAL to add population. But 99% of us already knew that.
The reproduction rate for specific cultures (and yes it is typically white cultures) is below this level. I don't know about you but I want my children and my grand children to know my culture and to live it and continue it. I think that is one pretty good reason for adding to the population.. but you go ahead, have no children and let your knowledge and all the culture your family has built over the centuries vanish just because people have made you believe that creating life is a bad thing.Comment -

You can't use the past agricultural revolutions to discuss the future state of things, because there are some significant differences. For one, the population differences between the past and future limits the ways that people can cultivate, irrigate, and harvest crops. Namely, fresh water is a limited resource and already the Middle East is up in arms over it, India's wells are having to drill deeper and deeper to tap into its aquifers, and China's rivers and dry weather have been shriveled, causing even the Chinese to want to lease land in neighboring, poor Asian countries. Many regions in Africa are not meant to sustain large populations and the more fertile parts are some of the land that's being acquired in leases by countries such as Saudi Arabia, South Korea, etc. The only agricultural revolution that these countries can possibly consider is building large complexes that use artificial lighting to grow hydroponic, or aeroponic crops year-round. Other than that and especially in a traditional agricultural sense, many regions of the world are screwed.Comment -
