Sometimes you have to read the whole story pony. We may be old and you may not be interested in kids, but I promise you that there are many people your age on SBR who either have them, are about to or are considering it for numerous reasons. I agree with you and did the same thing you say you're interested in: I travelled the world, lived a very crazy and blessed life thanks to my career, my biggest concern was what nail polish I needed to ask the lady for when I went for a manicure. For over 10yrs of my life before I chose to have a child.

I think in an ideal world, if people wait to have kids (or choose not to) until after they've got whatever out of their system then the child is better off for it. No resentment, no regrets. However the cookie doesn't always crumble that way so it's important we have compassion for others who may have taken a different path from us as well.

If everyone had the self-awareness to know if they can/want to/should have children or they can't/don't want to/shouldn't, then we wouldn't have some of the fiscal problems we have today. I'm ignoring over population because that's just insurmountable right now. Fiscally, America, Canada, Australia, etc... can make having children when you're not prepared for it, less attractive. But they don't. However, Australia and Canada are kicking the US's ass economically. Why?

There are no tests to become a parent. No legal age, no nothing. You need to take a test to drive, need to be 18 to vote, 21 to drink, etc... But you can become a parent and create a cycle of poverty all on your own with no questions asked. If young people don't think this is an issue that affects them, or will continue to affect them when they reach retirement age, they're living in dream world. Most of us 30+ realise that the thought of Social Security is a dream. Retirement plans? If we're lucky. But why can other countries figure this shit out and attempt to prepare for it and the US can't? It's very scary when you think about it.

Pony - you say Australia doesn't count but China does. Australia has reached an ALL TIME HIGH against the USD. Be afraid my friend. That shit shouldn't be happening to the biggest, best, most powerful country in the world. Especially from such a tiny little country that apparently doesn't matter.

To the point where some US company just got outbid by a Canadian one trying to buy an Aussie mine, and both the US and Canada continually got talked down in negotiations so they ended up with a minimal % while having to ensure a minimum # of Aussie jobs in the process. So they basically sold a 10th of their company yet guaranteed 99% of the jobs would be filled by Australians. Yet those Aussies will be paid by non Aussies.

They just found another literal gold mine the other day. They have gold and coal coming out of their arses and they've found the perfect way to capitalise on it. They're using their brains to maximise the little they have on this little island country.

Australia is somewhat focused on service but so is the US, to an even greater extent. As Cougs just said - the US produces nothing. There is nothing coming out of that country that the world either wants and more importantly needs. What next?

Well, I've been optimistic on America right along, as you know. I mean, I was optimistic when I knew things were going to go to hell. But things do , America gets off the track from time to time, and it was particularly so in the fall of 2008. But you can't stop this country. I mean, we have gone through, I don't know, 15 recessions, you know,world wars, civil war, you name it.

And there is a resiliency to the American system. It does work. And it sputters from time to time. It'll sputter from time to time in the future,but you don't want to get too concerned about that. It's kind of like having a bad crop in farming. If you've got some good land here in the Midwest, you're going to have a bad crop occasionally. But you know you're going to have mostly good crops and we have great soil for this country, metaphorically. And it works over time
