The question was for the greatest American racehorse. Why do you think that has to be a thoroughbred? Dan Patch was doing over 1 million a year in endorsements compared tp Ty Cobbs's 12,000 salary...If you extrapolate that to A-Rod's salary that would be about the same as a horse making 20 Billion in endorsements today....that's fame.

I think Dan Patch had it worse by breaking records and not having any other horse to run against. We all run better with competition. He did not have anyone to draft with, set the pace, or have anyone under him to push. Pretty impressive. Too bad he got treated like shit.

Horse racing is the one and only category I consider myself to be an expert at. It has been my living for 35 years. I take into consideration every major racing breed and in doing so one horse stands head and shoulders above the rest yet no one else on this forum knows enough about him to also call him the greatest...and yes his burial was ugly...unceremoniously thrown into a hole in the ground without a marker to prevent grave robbers from finding him...is there any other horse people worry about having its grave robbed?

Big Brown will be on this list in 10 years, I disagree that these 3 year olds were "weak"

The combined rest of the field only had 2 graded stakes wins...

Derby field not Preakness, BB was 4 wide the whole race and still toyed with them

No that was the preakness field... Only 2 horses from the derby even came over to the preakness, BB was one of them...

I know, the Derby field was not weak at all that was my point, the Preakness field on the other hand was terrible. Casino Drive jumping in the Belmont will give him a test maybe, would have liked to see what BehindattheBar could do yesterday also.

Would be great for a sport which has been dead for a while, the whole Barbaro thing was an attempt to bring news to it, frankly I think Bernardini would have beat him in the preakness anyways, still seeing a horse get injured kills me whether it be in the preakness or a 4,000 claimer

You're comparing apples to oranges, however, when you use Cobb's salary that was kept artificially low by the power of the owners and the reserve clause to the endorsements that Patch's owners received. Cobb was also doing endorsements in the early part of the 20th century, with his first real big deal with Coca-Cola (with his payment for said endorsement including stock). And it was the money he made in endorsements that he stuck back into stocks, and that made him one of the richest men of his day.
