Why is this question even being asked?

Secretariat - and its undisputed by anyone I've ever heard speak.

HE IS MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE!

Actually most of the horse racing community believes Secretariat to be 2nd behind Man o' War as the best American thoroughbred, check out the top 100 US horse throroughbred list compiled by a panel of distinguished horseracing experts for Bloodhorse magazine:

Man o' War had many similar accomplishments to Secretariat, although refusing to enter the 1920 Kentucky Derby there is absolutely no doubt he would've won that race, he won 20 of the 21 stakes races he competed in and as his career wound down in late 1920 there were no horse owners that would even compete against this monster horse (his 2nd and final season of 1920 was 11 races undefeated), he competed in a match race with the Triple Crown winner of 1919 Sir Barton and won easily by 7 lengths even though being rode lightly in the final furlong due to his tremendous lead. He was easily the greatest sire of all and many times more impressive than Secretariat as he produced more than 64 stakes winners and 200 various other champions, numerous great horses have ties to Man o' Wars bloodlines. It is very difficult to decide between this horse and Secretariat, but it is quite wrong to quickly assume that Secretariat was superior to Man o' War, it would simply depend on personal opinion which is the better horse, though most horse racing experts would choose Man o' War given not only his personal accomplishments but the incredible accomplishments of his offspring.

If you want to expand it to great North American horses, and include sires as well, then the no. 1 sire in the 20th century, siring no fewer than 146 stakes winning horses, (whose offspring have earned more than one billion dollars) is the Canadian horse Northern Dancer, who raced in the mid-60's, and won the North American eclipse award for best 3 year old in 1964. His descendants have won more Breeder's Cup races and Arc de Triomph's than anyone elses.

Needless to say, he is the great-grand sire of Big Brown.

NOT EVEN CLOSE! You guys are forgetting Dan Patch. He was never defeated, and nobody would race against him. He traveled in his own railroad boxcar just to set new track records at every stop he made. Up to 100,000 people would come out just to watch him. In the day Ty Cobb was the highest paid sports player at 12,000 a year, Dan Patch was raking in over a million a year in endorsements.
When you think of breaking world records by a fraction of a second...Dan Patch broke the world record by four full seconds and held it for decades. No horse matches his accomplishments.

Definately Secretariat... Secretariat, as a young colt, was told by vets he would never be able to race due to his weak legs... Then look at him!

If you are talking north america because the horse was Canadian,it's Northern Dancer. He cam close to winning the triple crown in 1964 winning the Kentiucky Derby and Preakness. His life record was 14 wins in 18 races. But his breeding legacy is what sets him apart from the others.Almost every stakes race has a number of his prodigy running. His bloodlines run throughout world racing.

Sory for repeating your post Art Vandaleigh.I saw you said the same.

I used to go to a minor league track in Winnipeg,Manitoba.Canada called Assiniboia Downs and you would see alot of Northern Dancers prodigy.I liked a horse called Northern Spike that I never failed to make money on.That horse helped me out financially a ton so I always have a fondness for Northern Dancer.

Every horse you've mentioned has been beaten. Dan Patch was argueably the most famous personality in the entire world at the turn of the century. He was definitely as famous as the President of the United States. Can you say that for any other horse?

I do... but heres my point... If hes "so good" nobody wanted to race him, that kinda makes him unable to make too strong of a name for himself... you have to race to have a legacy... how can you measure a horses success when he didnt race the bets of the best of his time?

Trigger and Silver are my two favorites.

I admit Dan Patch was a great horse... But the best horses are judged by triple crowns... Thats the real challenge..
