The US has about 1.5 percent of world reserves and consumes nearly 18 percent of oil produced. You can't circle that square.

This is what neocons don't understand. Numbers. They have no idea what you have just said. Maybe if you state it like this they will understand. If you drill everywhere in the US and pump all the oil you can you are still going to produce enough oil for only 4 states. All other 46 states will have to import based on current consumption.

Half of the oil consumed by the US is drilled here... where does that 4 state figure come in? Most of the rest comes from Canada and Mexico

Gas/petrol in the UK is heavily taxed and currently costs £1.29 per litre ($9.50 per gallon).
People still drive and probably still would if that was doubled.

Oil companies cannot control (or even influence) the exchange price of crude oil except by reducing output.

Compare the size of western Europe to America, and also the distances between big cities of each. America is MUCH more spread out than Europe, and high speed trains would be just another government money-pit, like Amtrak

Actual production continues to increase and is estimated to continue to do so until around 2015.

The IEA study you refer to relates to production per capita meaning that the rate of increase started to fall behind worldwide population growth in 2006.
