If the bible were made into a movie, it would be rated NC-17. It's chock full of action-packed torture, homosexuality, bestiality, incest, rape, wars, intoxication, plagues, lepers, and drugs. The bible is probably one of the most pornographic books known to man.
And all of those drugs people used - wow! How else do you explain people seeing a man inside of a burning bush? Or a person instantly reduced to a pillar of salt. Or a man able to cause a sea to just divide itself right down the middle. Or a man that was swallowed by a whale, and actually survived in there for 3 days!
And wow, just the final chapter of the bible - Revelations. That's the greatest sci-fi book ever created. Somebody should really make a movie out of that one:

I never really got why billions of people believe the oldest tale in the world is true.
Everytime I think about when the bible was written, I see some old man writing out his fantasies on paper, like an author would do today. Then he said it was true to someone else, who totally bought it because noone had ever lied to him before. And so it begun!Comment -
I can't comment intelligently on the topic of the Bible being a good read or not. I've prob only read about 5% of it. and I bet that is more than 90% of the posters in this thread.
from what I read in different points, it was obviously disjointed and from many different authors. It obviously wasn't some sort of conspiracy to create some "Fantasy" story, as it was a collection of writings over hundreds of years. with many historical accuracies.
maybe the OP's ire should be aimed at the people that decided on which writings and scrolls to leave in and leave out of the finalized "Christian" bible.
you can't just condemn Christianity if you are condeming the bible, as the Jews believe in the vast majority of the bible as well.
i'm not sure that the bible purports to be a book of hope to any old reader. It purports itself to be a historical document, the reader can do with it as he or she pleases.
I think Religion and Religious people have hurt, taken advantage, and killed people quite often. I'm not sure that you should blame writings or books for that issue though.Comment -
For one, a historical document would not include 'visions' of the history.
And secondly, the first form of writing came about around 3500 BCE. If the bible is real, why did God wait until around 100 CE to speak to people and have them record his word? Is there some reason that he waited ~3,600 years to do this? And for that matter, why did he quit speaking to us? So he told one specific group of people to write down certain things, and then decided to remain quiet for the next couple of thousand years?
If we are his children, shouldn't he want to drop in every once in awhile and give us a little sign that he's still there, watching over us, protecting us? I mean, that's what any good parent would do. Actually, a good parent would be there all the time for us. It's a reciprocal relationship. With religion, it's a one-way street.
We give our time and money to God. We worship him, tell him how awesome he is, how much we need him, and ask him for things that we 'need'. When he ignores us, we chalk it up as "God's will". When some coincidence happens (like an insurance check arrives in the mail for an overpayment or something), we say that it's a miracle and God does indeed answer prayers.
Another poster already touched on this, but all that we 'know' about God is what has been told to us as children, usually by our parents. Most Americans were also told of Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny. Eventually, we negate 75% of these as mere fantasies, passed down because of tradition. Yet, for some reason, we hold on to that last story told to us by our parents - the story of God and Jesus. Well, at least that is the Christian version.
Every single human civilization has worshiped some form of deity, whether singular or plural. From the early Egyptians that worshiped various gods of nature, to the Greek that worshiped deities that we now consider mythological, to our modern religions. Hinduism is the oldest religion that is still in practice, dating back to around 2000 BCE. Christianity is about 2,000 years ago.
We are not wrong to believe in a deity. As I've said, all civilizations have done so. Much of Christianity's roots comes from the Egyptian religion. From celebrating Christmas (a pagan holiday that isn't even the birth of Christ), to saying Amen at the end of your prayers (a tradition that was also borrowed from the Egyptians, as they used to say the name of Amon-Ra, their sun god, at the of their prayers.
To think that your religion is the 'right' one, and the only way to your heaven, makes little sense to me.Comment -

I mean damn, some of the shit in there is almost 4000 years old, obviously there's going to be a lot rendered obsolete or clarified in the process of a civilized world evolving over a few thousand years. Man is flawed. God is not, theoretically. So obviously any attempts by man to explain the existence of God are going to miss the mark somehow.
