Pretty low-risk signing for one year. Not bad. Plays a solid 1B and a good OPS. Very high ceiling, change of scenery might do him good.

Carlos Pena is sooooo over rated...woulda been a swoop if they got laRoche...Pena strikes out too much and his power number do not justify the amount of bread they gave him...He is a little better than Lee, but not better than Dunn who he will be paid like...F the Cubbies!

Pena was TERRIBLE last year. I despise this signing.

How is he getting paid like Dunn? Last I checked, 56 million > 10 million.

Wow I'm surprised by all the positive responses here, especially for a guy who hit .196 last season. It's going to be great to see another losing season from the Cubs!

Bad year but look a little deeper and he's averaged 36 HR and 102 RBI over the past 4 seasons, and is gold glove capable at 1B. Also career .881 OPS vs. RH pitching. He may also benefit both from a change of scenery and a move from a very tough division and to Wrigley Field. If it doesn't work out, it's only one year. Possible high-reward signing here. Much smarter than giving a multi-year deal to a middler like LaRoche or Overbay or overpaying for Dunn. And are the Cubs setting up to possibly swoop in next offseason for a shot at Fielder or....Pujols, if the Cards fail to sign?

Also, the Cubs really needed a 1B who can play defense. Young Castro is wild and Ramirez likes the dirt too. A guy like Dunn is pretty iffy at 1B, Pena has won a gold glove.

Probably not not the Cubs savior, but this is a good sign.

HAHAHAHAH Rickets has shown us nothing to make us think he wants to spend lots of money to win.
Pujols will easily be the highest paid player ever.

A lot of the flyballs he hits on the Tropicana (when he doesn't strike out ) are gonna be home-runs in windy city.

For 1 year $10 Mill, Pena will only find out how evil the Cubs fans are.

Pena will be hated in Chicago along with Steve Bartman.

If he couId keep that batting average up to a staggering .196 the Cubs are a Iock.

He'll probably be the best pitcher to move this offseason, other than Cliff Lee, and at a much cheaper price, and would be under control for 3 years. Suddenly would make Cubs rotation with Zambrano, Garza, Dempster not impossibly bad. Let's see if Jim Hendry blows it.

Pena's number last year were fueled by a huge spike in ground balls and teams employing the over shift on him on a regular basis.

Its possible that the Cubs (in need of a power lefty in a right dominated lineup) see something that they can fix, or they are just taking a flyer that last year was a blip. Either way the move to Wrigley will help if Pena can get balls back into the air.
