golf isn't a sport, but if you play a real sport, professionally, i believe it makes you an athlete.

to be an athlete you have to be able to do something athletic that the average person can not. not something 'skillful' that the average person can not.

how do you figure? all a pantload has to do is stand somewhere else and hit it. stand at the tee, stand in the sand, stand in tall grass, stand on the green and give one swing and walk to where ever you ball ends up. skill, then walking. its like if a chess player had to walk 200 yards between moves.Comment -

#22What an "athlete". You get to have someone stand next to you after every shot and tell you what club to use, how far it is to the pin, and how hard and from what direction the wind is blowing. And on top of all that, they carry all your heavy shit for you.Comment -

#27Its like saying that NASCAR is a Sport. I would list poker, NASCAR, Golf all under Competition, Like Curling. IMO sports are when there is 2 teams that can determine the outcome of a game when both teams are on the field/court at the same time, i.e. baseball, football, hockey.Comment -

#33those are sports. i think if you are at risk of losing your breath due to the effort you are putting out (physical exertion), and this event is being scored by an outside party, you are playing a sport.Originally posted by BigLee55yeah you got me on that, there are exceptions to every rule i guess. but is skiing a sport? snowboarding? or just competitions...hmmmm
horse racing is a sport, but the horses are the athletes, not the midgets on top of them.Comment -

#34the "sport" of golf has a new element to the game apparently:
Golfer faces charges in hawk killing
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — PGA Tour golfer Tripp Isenhour was charged with killing a hawk on purpose with a golf shot because it was making noise as he videotaped a TV show
Isenhour was with a film crew for "Shoot Like A Pro" on Dec. 12 at the Grand Cypress Golf course. The 39-year-old golfer, whose real name is John Henry Isenhour III, was charged Monday with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird.
According to court documents, Isenhour got upset when a red-shouldered hawk began making noise, forcing another take. He began hitting balls at the bird, then 300 yards away, but gave up.
Isenhour started again when the hawk moved within about 75 yards, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brian Baine indicated in a report.
Isenhour allegedly said "I'll get him now," and aimed for the hawk.
"About the sixth ball came very near the bird's head, and (Isenhour) was very excited that it was so close," Baine wrote.
A few shots later, witnesses said he hit the hawk. The bird, protected as a migratory species, fell to the ground bleeding from both nostrils.Comment -
