Yes, let's talk about hypocrisy. Obama campaigned on a pledge to end the wars. He spoke of the Bush administration's policies that led to the needless loss of life, and an unacceptable amount of American casualties. The media hounded our military throughout Bush's time in office, looking for any incident they could find to publicize and embarrass our troops. They kept daily counts of the American troops lost in battle, photographing their coffins are they returned home, protesting and cursing Bush's name for the tragedy. And yet the number of U.S. casualties in the last two years under Obama has exceeded the number of death's during Bush's entire administration. And none of those whiners bitching when Bush was in office say anything. That's hypocrisy.

They are politicians, they are all hypocrites. Obama said one thing about the war and then did another, because his circumstances changed. Now he's the commander in chief, and he's responsible, which means he can't arm-chair quarterback this thing anymore. And when you're in the thick of it, sometimes you have to do things you might not have wanted to do.

This Tea Party ear-mark bullshit is the same thing. It's not like they are requesting these earmarks for next year or the year after. These were things that would have been requested over a year and a half ago, before the Tea Party movement really took off, and the idea of banning earmarks was just a f*cking Fantasy.

Let's put this earmark culture in other terms: classroom cheating.

Say you go to school, and you're an honest, intelligent, hard-working student who doesn't cheat. And you get your grades back to find out that despite your efforts, you are in the bottom third of your class. How are all these lazy slackers who never seem to know what they are talking about outscoring you on the tests? Well you come to find out they're cheating. And here are your options: be a snitch, and get the whole class mad at you, or start cheating yourself. And so what do you do? You start cheating. But you don't feel good about it.
And you come to find out, after cheating for a while with some of your fellow classmates, that they don't feel too good about it either, but they feel like they have to keep up. If no one else cheated, the wouldn't cheat, but everyone else does, so they do. But they aren't happy about it.

And say these folks got together and started trying to convince everyone to stop cheating. Well a lot of the cheaters are going to laugh in their faces. Because a lot of the cheaters need cheating. Some are just lazy and don't want to do the work, others are just stupid and couldn't succeed if it wasn't for the cheating. Meanwhile, the honest kids, even while trying to spread this message to stop cheating, don't feel they can completely stop cheating, because if they do, then they will unfairly fall behind, because the teacher is assigning work based on the completion rate of the majority of the class, and the majority of the class is still cheating.

So are these honest kids who don't want to cheat, but end up cheating to keep up hypocrites? Maybe. But shouldn't their efforts be held in much higher regard than the straight-up cheaters who don't care one way or the other?

Washington is a cheaters culture. Been that way for decades. Scam after scam after scam. It's hard to maintain one's integrity and stick around in an environment like that. Would it be great if the Tea Party people didn't allow themselves to fall into the same vile slithering pit of snake charmers? Sure. It'd be awesome. But wholly beyond reasonable expectation. The reality is that the GOP, on the whole, is fairly unified in banning earmarks. I think that's a positive thing. It's commendable. And yet all you liberal douchebags want to do is focus on the negative and call them hypocrites, like every one of your ideas isn't conflicted with some sort of hypocrisy at some point.

I totally agree that you can't have a functioning democracy when you have this much separation between the haves and the have nots. But your portrayal of this disparity lacks any perception of a contextual reality.

Money grows. It's supposed to. That's the whole point. There isn't some max value of wealth in the world. The pie isn't static. It gets bigger. So from that standpoint, the top 400 salaries going from averaging $12 million to $240 million is a good thing. It means we're getting richer. But yes, you're right when the top 1% are the only ones making money. But don't let these tax numbers fool you.

See, there was a time, long before the internet, where it was much easier for a rich person, MUCH EASIER, to hide your money. It's still pretty easy now if you've got the right connections, but it's gotten harder because the paper trails are all electronic now and easier to trace.

And when the IRS would jack up taxes on rich people, they wouldn't pay the IRS. They'd hide it. Offshore accounts. Tax shelters. Municipal bonds. And that's after they cooked the books a few times over first. And so we have all these numbers showing that when tax levels are raised on the rich, then they don't accumulate such a large percentage of the wealth. But the numbers are completely bogus, because those numbers are entirely based on what the IRS is aware of. And when tax rates get higher, rich people go way out of their way to make sure that there's a lot of their wealth IRS isn't aware of.

But see, all that hiding from the IRS, it takes time and energy, it's often grossly illegal, and really, is just a huge pain in the ass. So when tax rates are low, rich people don't take the time and worry about hiding their money. They just throw that money back into the market because they know with the lower tax rates they can't make more money that way than by taking all that time to hide it.

The haves don't have any more of the wealth now than they did when taxes were higher, it's just that when taxes are lower we are more aware of the wealth they have---and so it seems like higher taxes spread the wealth, but if that were true, then the average income of the have nots would increase at a higher rate when we tax the rich. And it doesn't. Make sense?

If not, here's an economist laying it out with actual research:


Internal Revenue Service data show that there were 206 people who reported annual incomes of one million dollars or more in 1916. But, as the tax rate on high incomes skyrocketed under the Woodrow Wilson administration, that number plummeted to just 21 people reporting a million dollars a year in income five years later.

What happened to all those millionaires? Did they flee the country? Were they stricken with fatal diseases? Did they meet with foul play?

Not to worry. Right after Congress enacted the cuts in tax rates that Mellon had been urging, there were suddenly 207 people reporting taxable incomes of a million dollars or more in 1925. As Casey Stengel used to say, "You could look it up." It is on page 21 of an Internal Revenue publication titled "Statistics of Income from Returns of Net Income for 1925."

Where had all the income of those millionaires been hiding? In tax-exempt securities like state and local bonds, among other places. Mellon had urged Congress to end tax exemptions for such securities, even before he got them to cut tax rates. But he succeeded only with the latter, and only after a political struggle with those who made the same kinds of arguments that are still being made today by those who cry out against "tax cuts for the rich."

The government, which collected less than $50 million in taxes on capital gains in 1924, suddenly collected well over $100 million in capital gains taxes in 1925. At lower tax rates, it no longer made sense to keep so much invested in tax-exempt securities, when more money could be made by investing in the economy.

As for "the rich"-- who really were rich in those days, when $100,000 was worth more than a million dollars is worth today-- those in the highest income brackets paid 30 percent of all taxes in 1920 and 65 percent of all taxes by 1929, after "tax cuts for the rich."

How can that be? Because high tax rates on paper, that many people avoid, often does not bring in as much tax revenue as lower tax rates that more people actually pay, after it is safe to come out of tax shelters and earn higher rates of taxable income.

The investors do this because it makes them better off, on net balance, even after they pay more money in taxes on incomes that have gone up. More important, the economy benefits when there is more investment in things that create more jobs and rising output.

King - When a government taxes too much or over-regulates - it makes doing business there unattractive -sometimes prohibitive. Of course they go elsewhere. That's what free markets - which have served us well for over 200 years - are all about. Everyone acts in their own best interest. You should too. If a book in Vegas is ripping you off - you go across the street. To keep you from not doing it - they would have to build a wall around the place. Does the Berlin Wall sound familiar? Or Cuba?
