#109i'm curious about something similar.
how much can you get down in vegas on a typical major sport game? NFL? NBA?Comment -

#110others will know more about getting money down...
but at -107, a 53% win rate gives you 2.5% ROI.... so for you to make $100k per year, you need to put down $4MM of bets. that's approx $10k per day.
doesn't seem like that difficult a task......... of course, fewer games will mean volatility. more games will need alot of research.... also people mentioned shopping for lines. that's a bit pain whether online or B/M. and to not get cut back, you'd have to be mostly betting high volume games where there is less inefficiency.
didn't a guy in australia bet more than $1B per year on horse racing?Comment -

#111i see ESPN has a new in-depth article on tim donaghy fixing NBA games.... his partner, who specialized in getting down action for bettors i.e. he wasn't a bookie himself but an intermediary, was trying get down $1MM per game. and surely his bookies would notice he always won. so it can't be quite as hard to get down action as people suggest here.Comment -

#112It's possible to make even more with sports betting arbitrage and bonus/cashback hunting. Of course, you must have a good capital.
If you want to make it as a straight handicapper, just bet 2,000$/game and if you can make +50 units at the end of the year, yes you can. You need to win +1 unit/week.Comment -

these people who claim plenty of people right here at SBR do it every year, well I would like to see those results and his plays for one full year, that is what I would like to witness. I have been in this business longer than many of you are alive and I will tell you this, I have never had one single player win in the long run. through the decades I have dealt with probably close to 1000 players--not one.
so yes it is possible, is it probable not even close. if you truly understood some simple math you would know this.Comment -

#12199% of gamblers lose and about 1% of that remaining winning 1% are pros the rest are survivorship bias
if you have enough people flip coins you will have a few that come out winners long term by just survivorship bias.
the key is not can you can you not should you should you not, the key is do you have an edge at max bet limits (which is what you need to win long term enough to be a pro)
96% lose at openers
98% lose at heat check 1k limits
99% lose at max bet limits
to make a 100k you need to be betting at max limits
you also need to have enough bets to overcome variance
if you bet a 100 games a year even with an edge you got about a 40% chance to lose yearly
if you bet 10000 games a year with an edge you got about a 10% chance to still lose yearly
size of your edge can slightly change these numbers but reality
huge bankroll (6 figures) a good edge at max limits and 30 or 40 bets a day that have that edge
its a huge task and very very few can do it and even if you did it one year, the gap is getting smaller every year, every year there are less long term winners than before because the lines are getting sharper as bettors get sharper.
if the Yankees are -150 you better darn well believe they are going to win 600 out of 1000 at that line, if you believe anything else you are just wrong
these things suck but they are very true and it does not change the fun it is to bet on games.Comment -

Originally posted by danshan11I would wildly guess most people that can achieve this level of success long term (1000s of games bet) probably do it on the side and they are probably doing a bunch of advanced work in other similar areas as well.
I think you are probably right Rudy when you say they should do something else because if they are this skilled in modeling and other skills the market for employment is probably pretty darn lucrative in other areas and probably pays better and if nothing else more consistently
Please bro, I could do this all day
