If you can live anywhere you want, working from home, you should consider the rural south, places like southern Missisippi, southern Alabama, southern Georgia, east Tennessee... Property is REALLY cheap, the weather is outstanding, the people are friendly, taxes are low, there isn't any crime to speak of, liberals stay out (thank god), the schools are good. I live in southern Mississippi and I LOVE it here. Bought a nice house on two acres for $140 K. If you have the stamina to wait out the gulf coast mess (it will get resolved eventually) you can pick up houses and condos in gulport/biloxi for a song.
I like the way you think....Waveland, MS was wiped out from the beach to a half mile inland, but would be a nice place to rest my bones for a while.

Shari I've lived in ct my whole life and it's a great place to grow up exspecially if your a kid. I don't really like western ct too much actually unless your extremely rich living in simsbury or Avon but middle class to upper middle class Cheshire Wallingford north haven glastonbury are all great towns to raise children in good school systems and neighborohoods

Vegas is a lot different than the East Coast. The weather seems extreme. This winter was EXTREMELY windy and when it is hot, it gets HOT. The girls are different in their personalities, and skin is always in fashion.

Been in Vegas since '97 and wouldn't want to be anywhere else...Grew up in the fine state of Kansas, left after college at the ripe old age of 23 and went south, had to get out of the freezin weather and snow piled up for about 4 months a year, settled in Victoria, TX went to work for Pepsi Cola and stayed there for 18 years...
In '97 Pepsi moved me and my wife to Las Vegas NV and have loved every minute since...Left Pepsi after 2000 and just kind of kicking back ever since...I have a 3bed,2 bath, 3 car garage, and a nice cool pool in the back yard..Grill almost daily and now we have a little girl that is almost 3..
Things are no different here in Vegas than any other city you folks live in...Sure gambling is at your disposal at every turn..but it's what's you do with it that's important..I live in the NW part of valley away from it all..We have bars, casino's, golf courses all within a short drive from the house...
Had the good fortune of having a helluva good year in 2005 gambling wise that has made life much easier for the family and myself..No debt, no mortgage, it costs me 200.00 a month to live in my house..2,000 a year taxes and 400 insurance...
the weather here is nice for 10 months a year and hot as hell for 2 month's a year...but that's why 70% of homes here have pools...
Like I said to each their own but Vegas is the place for me and my family... Oh yeah, failed to mention, my outlaws( wife's parents) just bought a home about 10 minutes from us and they had lived in south Texas all their lives...They love it so much more for them to day and the cost of living is really unbeatable...
Actually I gave my .05cents on the subject but that's all right.. thanks for your time...
PS..JJ we got rid of 99.99% of gullyriggers with the last rain 3.5 months ago...

Poochie, the girls are even more materialistic here than in L.A. or N.Y. Being a transient area, they are not here long, and have more of a sense of living in the now. The good side of that is they put out. The bad side is they put out only with meatheads or rich old fucks (paging JJGold). All in all the lack class or substance.

How much of a "cowboy" culture is it over there, if any?

I have seen las Vegas grow since 1990. My uncle moved there in the seventies and as a kid we always visited him in the summer, very hot. Before 1990 vegas didnt grow much there was the strip and that was pretty much it, but then it started to grow and the suburban areas of vegas was born. The Lakes, Summerlin, Henderson, Seven Hills and with it came local casinos Sunset Station, Gvr, Red Rock, The Rio. If you can keep away from the strip and just go down there on the weekends to make money then its somewhat ok. But there is not alot of outdoor activity there and you start to get bored going to the casino everyday.
