I've never really been off the strip, downtown a few times didnt look so bad to me. My girl was on city data and some jerkoff told her crime is out of control? I think best to hear from guys that live there.

#2I do not live there, but some parts off the strip are not pretty, and other parts are. Very cheap living in Nevada. If you can withstand the heat and keep your gambling urges in control it can be a pretty good place to live imo.Comment -

#4The heat is 2x more of a factor here in Florida compared to living in Vegas.
The heat is way, way overrated in Vegas..........only really bad a few days in the summer when the temps are above 106.............otherwise the weather in Vegas is OUTSTANDING!!
Great +EV oppurtunities for gamblers, great food, and low cost of living are other positives.
The negatives are the pollution, crime, traffic, and lack of culture.............but all these can be somewhat easily handled by most.Comment -

#6Originally posted by Mr Windy CityI know I hear it all the time. It's DRY heat. I don't give a **** what it is, in the summer, being outside in vegas is one big oven, shit just cooks you.

Again, if it not OVER 106(key number here), the heat in Vegas is a non-factor for most...........granted, there may be 30+ days of 106+, but the thing to keep in mind is that there is less humidity than most places and the sun is not nearly as intense as it is in more southern regions...........in the south, the sun will literally fry you, not so in Vegas except on only a few days.
Florida has humidity coupled with intense sun............brutal...............way less of both in Vegas.Comment -

#8Originally posted by Mr Windy CityI know what you are talking about. I have been there when it's like that. You walk outside and just start to friggin sweat. I got fried so bad one time from the Florida sun I swear to go I was purple. Was shivering on relatives living room floor for 2 days because I got drunk and fell asleep by the pool. JUST FRIED.

#15Here is another HUGE positive for Vegas.............
Today is a perfect example, a couple local watering holes are throwing World Cup parties this morning...........
Meanwhile, there hoards of casinos and bars in Vegas that one can do this 24/7.........and the beer is free!!!
Finding entertainment like that here in Florida is a farce...........so today, I'm suppossed to meet the gang at the bar for 9 dollar chicken wings, $3.75 beers, and no gaming around ............pleeeeez Fred.Comment -

LV is no place to raise a kid, I hate to say it. I don't know the private schools here, but the public ones have incredibly low standards and massive drop-out rates.Comment -

#23The hard thing about the hat in Vegas is, well 2 things, its like a fukking oven AT NIGHT even and my lips get so dry and chapped i'd have to take lip balm everywhere i go, and thats annoying. Not hospitable for human living. Plus there is a water shortage, can't go on forever....Comment -

#27I lived in vegas for about 8 years and it all depends what you are looking for, i have kids. Here are someof my thoughts.
Heat - Yes its hot as hell during the summer. No way to get around it. Stretches of days with +100 degree temps. Its hot. The winters are mild.
Housing - There are some jacked up parts of town in Vegas, some off the strip and in the older parts of north las vegas. I live out west by red rock canyon. Its nice out here
Jobs - The worst thing about LV is the job market. It sucks right now. If you have a decent job you can live well here as things like food, housing are not all that expensive but the problem is getting that job. The days of coming to vegas lookimg for a job and settling down are pretty much over. You better have a gig lined up before you get here
From a sports gambling sense its great no worrying about getting whored by your off shore book and wondering how to get the money transferred and all that. Just walk in to your local book and cash in and cash out.Comment -

I think I'm going to have to research different areas to live and see what the private schools are like as I've heard the same discouraging things McBain mentioned about public schools there. Thanks again everyone - you've helped me out a lot and sorry for hijacking your thread teaser.Comment -

#30I just moved out to summerliin/red rock about a year ago from north las vegas. I wanted to years ago but we could not afford it but with the market crash and all the bank owned homes we were able to swing it. Things are more affordable out here now. GL.Comment -

#32Originally posted by shari91Thanks for this! The job issue isn't a worry - in fact that's one reason I was considering Vegas. The company I work for is headquartered in LA and I refuse to move back there so I figured this was a decent alternative. I work from home so it's not like I have to commute every week or anything. If the heat is comparable to Arizona, then that wouldn't be a problem at all for me as I've lived there before. In fact, the promise of no more winters is holding more appeal than anything else at the moment considering I'm freezing my butt off here at the moment.

Property is REALLY cheap, the weather is outstanding, the people are friendly, taxes are low, there isn't any crime to speak of, liberals stay out (thank god), the schools are good. I live in southern Mississippi and I LOVE it here. Bought a nice house on two acres for $140 K.
If you have the stamina to wait out the gulf coast mess (it will get resolved eventually) you can pick up houses and condos in gulport/biloxi for a song.Comment -
