$11 for a pack for cigarettes in NY
Holy hell... any smokers that live in New York? Are you gonna quit?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- New York City smokers already pay the highest cigarette taxes in the nation, but a new state law will push those taxes even higher this summer.

The state legislature on Monday approved a bill adding an additional state tax of $1.60 to every pack sold, effective July 1. This bill, which was signed by Gov. David Paterson on Monday, will raise the state tax to $4.35 per pack.

New York City smokers pay an additional municipal tax of $1.50 per pack, for a current total tax of $4.25 per pack. That's the highest state-local tax whammy in the country, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Chicago is the runner-up, at $3.66 per pack.

This new tax increase means that smokers in the city will pay $5.85 per pack in taxes. This drives the average local price up to nearly $11 per pack, according to some estimates.

The tax hike is aimed at generating an additional $440 million in 2010-2011 tax revenue to support healthcare programs.

The bill also requires that taxes to be imposed on cigarettes sold at Indian reservations, including the Shinnecock Indian Nation, which was recently recognized by the federal government.

"We've had very preliminary talks with not only Gov. Paterson but the Spitzer administration, so we knew this was coming and we're following it closely," said Randy King, chairman of board of trustees for the Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton, where several stores sell tax-free cigarettes. "We're just going to take the information back to the tribe and see what direction we get on how to approach it."

Is there a way to purchase online or smuggle it in?

                      When will it reach $50/eighth-ounce?

Actually they should be closer to $12 a pack and hell yes I'm quitting. Phuken NY can't even afford to kill myself with cigs anymore.

It would be cheaper to buy a nick of mary and a 6 pack every night

I knew smokers who used to buy them online for like $1.50 a pack. Had to buy in cartons and the cartons were like $14.99 each. It was only 4 years ago, but I think our gov't shut those sites down because they were buying at www.yesmoke.com and that site doesnt work anymore.

Anyways to me its funny every time they raise the cig price and they say they are going to quit, but they dont.

When I was young my dad used to swear to god if they ever went to $1 a pack he would never smoke another cigarette. Today he pays the $7 a pack or whatever and says he is quitting every time they raise the price.

Cig smokers are bigger slaves to their addiction than crack addicts. No other drug addicts in the world have to have a hit as often as cig smokers. I know a lot of them that will smoke 2 cig's and have to have another cig within 10 minutes.

I bought online as recently as December but quit in January. My place went out of business in Dec was like $20 a carton for off brands like Seneca. I think there are still places around in Kentucky, but I'd avoid NY.

You risk the gov't coming after you for taxes if they ever get a hold of company records.

                                                    I used a1cig.com

You risk the gov't coming after you for taxes if they ever get a hold of company records.

Yeah I told her to watch that. I wasnt sure if it was even legal. This woman was buying like 20 cartons at a time, buying for all the smokers at work, putting it on her credit card, then collecting the cash back from the people at work. I told her just wait until they catch you, but she wasnt worried because the website said it was all legal as long as you dont sell them at a profit.

                                                                I haven't touched a cig in 11.5 months (hell yeah I'm counting).

                                                                Best thing I ever did.

I thought I'd feel better than I do though. Any ex-smokers want to weigh in on how long it takes you to feel a lot better.

Definitely don't miss my clothes smelling like crap and waking up with a really achy chest in the mornings after I smoked.

Probably save myself $500 a year too.
