Far and away the reason this is the #1 sport in the world..........as citizens of third world countries like Costa Rica and Guam can play the game with no money.

With sports in countries like the USA and CANADA that feature sports such as football, baseball, hockey, and golf, one actually needs a few bucks to play the freaking sport.

I like soccer, but it being the most popular sport in the world means diddly squat in terms of entertainment value.

Guam is NOT 3rd world, it is a possession of the USA and has a living standard better that half of the American hillbilly South. I lived there, wonderful place. A lot of American military though.

Fish is spot on. I spent a year in Bosnia and we had groups from back home send soccer balls over for the school we adopted. All they had was a chalk board & a coal burning stove to stay warm in the winter, but they could kick a ball through two tree stumps as a goal.

Gentlemen, I'm Costa Rican, so thanks for all the compliments you gave to my Country. Is different to live here from criticize from the US, where the picture seems different. Is not that we play soccer because we are 3rd world countries, because if you do your homework and make a good research you would find that eventhough the best payed team in the world are the NY Yankees, the second is Real Madrid from Spain, the third is Barcelona, from Spain also, and the forth is the Chelsea from the English Premier League. Besides, in Europe their favorite sport is Soccer as well...

In Costa Rica we do play baseball, basketball, football... and other Sports, however, Soccer is the #1 Sport, is a matter of culture, is part of somebody's idiosyncrasy just that. Is not a matter of money, is not that is just because is cheap (assuming that it is), people around the world just seem to like it... And as many people can get payed millions od dollars or euros for play the sports you are discussing about, you're saying we're 3rd world countries because in smaller countries soccer balls are given to kids to entertain them, caring for a sport that we play since we were kids...

I like Football, Baseball and Basketball, otherwise I wouldn't be here, but even when you're calling Costa Rica a 3rd world country, we play the same sports as you do, with less money, that I have to admit. So thank you for the compliment, because eventhough we do the same you do, we play the sport we like, not because it's cheaper or more expensive, but because we like it eventhough we could play all the sports I mentioned above (I assume all your sports amuse you, otherwise you wouldn't be playing them either)...

Let's see you kick a soccer ball over 150 km/h. Granted soccer players probably couldn't hit a baseball 350 feet, just like baseball players couldn't hit the top corner of the net while running at full speed from 20 yards out.

If you think baseball has more action than soccer, this debate ends right now. Watching baseball is like watching paint dry. I enjoy playing it, but I haven't actually watched a full 9 inning game from start to finish in years. There's no pace to the game. There's no clock, players can spend however much time they want doing things that aren't essential to the game, like taking 8 practice swings before each at bat and forcing fans to watch them do this.

When I was a kid, we played lots of pickup games with almost no equipment.

well believe it or not, people living in 3rd world countries are not the ones that are making the sport popular. Since they are so poor, they actually don't get to watch all the world cup action right?

Therefore they are not the ones that comprise the $710 million in worldwide viewers the world cup final gets, so in essence the sport is even more popular if you include the third world countries.

This is an endless argument that cannot be won against someone whose mind is already made up.
