Far and away the reason this is the #1 sport in the world..........as citizens of third world countries like Costa Rica and Guam can play the game with no money.

With sports in countries like the USA and CANADA that feature sports such as football, baseball, hockey, and golf, one actually needs a few bucks to play the freaking sport.

I like soccer, but it being the most popular sport in the world means diddly squat in terms of entertainment value.

      What's that mean?

Make no mistake about it, soccer is the most popular sport in the world because all one needs is a cheap ass ball ........or coconut

How many people play hockey in Guam or Costa Rica........I'm guessing very few, if any.

Even with basketball one needs a cement playground, a decent pair of shoes, and a $6.43 post/rim/net.

Soccer can be played in barefeet for godsakes and on any surface...........LOL.............wow, what a cheapass sport this is the more I ponder this.

                              Another moronic post from pavy.

You forgot the bus fare to and from the soccer field, the $100 fee to use the private pitch, diving lessons, expected hospital costs from leg injuries.

PS: Classic parts are the bolded ones, because as we all know kids do not already have shorts, shirts, socks, or a hat.

Where's the keeper with padded gloves?

Fish your wrong the ball is not cheap but the ability to make a ball out of a roll of tape you find in the trash heaps on the the edge of the shanty towns and the fact that their are players who have made it big coming from that environment are what give people hope and make the sport popular

Fishhead is spot on; another reason soccer is popular is because it's the only sport in which playing not to lose actually increases your chances of avoiding a loss.

haha, or yanking a 'flag' out of somebody's back pocket

it's too bad that baseball isn't popular here in cr. i'm teaching my wife's 6 year old cousin how to play, and he really likes it. american football is finally catching on - there's finally a league going on here.

Rugby and aussie rules football?? Not all sportsman require armour to play a contact sport lol. And going on your reckoning why then is dodgeball not the 2nd most popular game in the world - only requires a ball surely?
