#72Originally posted by cleavelandCan someone explain to me how the following quote from Tim Donaghy's book wouldn't directly affect the number of points scored in the game? I wonder if the ref who instigated the "first foul of the game" game wasn't betting on the under? That game would set the tone toward the under every time and as all know games that start off with a low scoring first few minutes tend to stay low scoring the whole game... Who wouldn't bet the under if they knew the "first foul of the game" game was gonna be played?
Does anyone really believe Donaghy wouldn't have bet the under if he knew the "first foul of the game" game was gonna be played? I say he would have FOR SURE!!!!... He said in the interview that he was betting based on a 4 or 5 point advantage and this game could give you a much bigger advantage than that on the total.
The technical foul game would give you a slight advantage on the first half over/under, first half ATS, and game ATS as well.
The technical foul game would you give you a big advantage on the first quarter ATS.
My guess is that when the refs "let them play" they're betting on the under at least some of the time. When the refs "call it tight" they're on the over at least some of the time.
If I did an interview with Donaghy I'd ask if there were games being played that he didn't mention in his book, how often the games he mentioned were being played and by whom, I would ask specific questions about things like this quote:
From my earliest involvement with Bavetta, I learned that he likes to keep games close, and that when a team gets down by double-digit points, he helps the players save face. He accomplishes this act of mercy by quietly, and frequently, blowing the whistle on the team that's having the better night. Team fouls suddenly become one-sided between the contestants, and the score begins to tighten up. That's the way Dick Bavetta referees a game — and everyone in the league knew it.
Fellow referee Danny Crawford attended Michael Jordan's Flight School Camp years ago and later told me that he had long conversations with other referees and NBA players about how Bavetta propped up weak teams. Danny told me that Jordan himself said that everyone in the league knew that Bavetta cheated in games and that the players and coaches just hoped he would be cheating for them on game night. Cheating? That's a very strong word to use in any sentence that includes the name Dick Bavetta. Is the conscious act of helping a team crawl back into a contest "cheating"? The credo of referees from high school to the NBA is "call them like you see them." Of course, that's a lot different than purposely calling more fouls against one team as opposed to another. Did Bavetta have a hidden agenda? Or was he the ultimate company man, making sure the NBA and its fans got a competitive game most times he was on
the court?
Studying under Dick Bavetta for 13 years was like pursuing a graduate degree in advanced game manipulation. He knew how to marshal the tempo and tone of a game better than any referee in the league, by far. He also knew how to take subtle — and not so subtle — cues from the NBA front office and extend a playoff series or, worse yet, change the complexion of that series.Comment -

#73Also, why in the hell is the FBI acting as the police force for the NBA?
Did anyone catch how Donaghy said the FBI told him the NBA was upset about him picking games?
Does the FBI have a relationship with the NBA that we don't know about?
Why can't Donaghy bet now that he has nothing to do with the NBA?
The SBR interview was like a Public Relations whitewash! The SBR interview was totally superficial!

One of the true GAMBLAS if there every was one. May be a 2nd cousin of "Sick Gambler"
The smarter play would be to wait out his probation, then open his tout service.Comment -
