    - Why don't you move to a cheap, small town within the US instead of migrating ?

If you want to do something for your kids.. Make as much money as you can while you are still alive.. Trust me.. The younger generation will be dead without an inheritance.

Also, how is assisted living a dying field? Aren't Americans living longer than ever before? Don't you guys rake in their Social Security to keep them alive?

I know people who work in this kind of field (high end places though) and although they are scaling back and contracting its work force.. They are much needed and I don't see them going away or anything like that.

Holidays were big days in my field. Being in that field , the more time I took off, the more the opposition gained an edge. Tough business. So when I started to steal a couple of hours here and there to make events that my kids participated in, over time it started to catch up.I could feel the edge that I felt I had, starting to slip.
Long story short,I did this for about 4 years before leaving a job I had been in for over 20 years. It seemingly took me 3 or 4 years to finally decide to leave but in hind sight, I had made that decision, the first time I left to catch a little league game.Sounds to me that you might have also.
So if you leave your job,you take care of what probably ails you and your wife. But have you discussed uprooting your family with your sons? It is not that you need their approval, but you should hear what they have to say. They will appreciate the opportunity and the respect that you gave them in years to come, even if they cant show it now. Also, is someone else around to help with your parents as well as your wife's parents if they are still alive?
My opinion is to change jobs and see where that takes you. If after a year or so, leaving the country still seems right, well , maybe that's what you need to do. I live in Maryland so I am not much help with Indiana .Where I live in Maryland it is a very expense place to raise a family. Wasn't that way 30 years ago but is now. A lot of people I know that started to struggle with the expenses moved to Maryland's eastern shore, Deleware and N.C.They have all said the same thing.Everything's less expensive and the pace of life is slower.
You have a ton of options but again, in my opinion, making several drastic life changing decisions all at once, throws so many things at a fix that you might never know which one really was the fix.
A plan with several steps to it seems like the safest way to approach this and like it or not you have to play it safe for the sake of your sons, especially at that age.
        I hope that helps.Good luck.
        First off..great post.

Secondly you make some great points. While I agree that a drastic life change is dangerous it was just an idea...nothing set in stone yet. Will be discussed thoroughly and vacations/visits would most definitely take place before any move. I agree though...a career change is definitely in need.

Also where I live is one of the most poverty stricken areas in the country. All the factories closing down in Indiana has buried the economy and the only thing thriving around here is restaurants. Sad but true. I am not talking sit down food either. A relocation is inevitable. I was simply playing with the idea of making our new home a foreign country with a low cost of living...I still favor the idea from the time I spent overseas..many years ago..but there is still much to be done before I can realistically consider that.

To tell you the truth I am not sure what I would do with myself..

I suppose I have time to figure that out..

Maybe I will start a bakery specializing in Cupcakes. I hear those are booming right now.

Assisted living for the mentally handicapped is a much different field than that of the elderly.

          Sorry I should have specified.

I think its a great idea to make a change in my opinion why "tough it out" when you dont have to. Life is about happiness and if you aren't happy then you aren't living life. Right now i'm 20 years old in college I make 1200 dollars a month live on my own, own my car, have a cell phone, clothes, money for gambling and I work 2 hours a day so guess what I get to do for the rest of the day? Whatever the **** I want, because I have that freedom and time to enjoy myself I haven't been this happy my whole life. I mean yeah with maybe 2 grand a month and the same amount of time I could do alot more fun shit, but I stay pretty entertained. The way I see it is I work to live, not live to work. Enjoy life. Believe me I wouldn't trade my life for a job where I make 6 figures if I had to work 40 hours a week. (unless it was just unreal easy.) And the comment on smoking pot and long hair someone made earlier, there is nothing wrong with that. Shit they make legal stuff now and all it is is cheap entertainment IMO. Anyways, if anybody wants the keys to happiness feel free to message me! Good luck with your decision.

When you have a family you cannot play fukkin woodstock and think you can do anything you want, I am telling you all the guys I know that quit their jobs because they were not happy regretted it and until this day still fukkin broke mad at the fukkin world. If you want to go the UK and hide from the world and your kids become Gothics that is fine with me. I do not like the path your heading down Holter.

take a look at europe my brother.. now would be a good time to buy property over there as they are collapsing and will surely round out in a few years.. so it might be a good time to move..

Countries like Spain, Greece, Italy, are all becoming affordable

honestly if i could choose my friend.. i would move to spain.. or maybe costa rica..

i have traveled all over spain and loved every min of it.. the people are beautiful.. everyone takes 2 hours for lunch and drinks a full bottle of wine.. u want a slower pace.. centered around community and your family i feel like you might find it out there..

i also think you might find yourself here in the states as well..

i was going through something very similar to you.. i was living in miami and i own my own business. and i was just feed up with the work and lifestyle that i was living..

i moved out to the bay area california because i need to slow down and find what was important to me.. i love being surrounded by nature and i found tons of nature out here.. back home we just have beaches and flat sprawling land.. Now i go on weekend trips all over the state , climbing, biking, surfing .. you name it.. this is shit i didn't do really a year ago..

i went to school in the midwest and have been to indiana many times.. i think just you leaving that state might bring some welcomed change into your live.. no offense there is nothing wrong with indiana

I am not 100% sure but why would you move from no state income tax state to highest (or thereabouts) income tax rate state ?

Good point about Spain; "English friendly" as well; loads of British migrants in southern part of the country.

Have you ever read the book or saw the movie The Mosquito Coast? It's not exactly what you(Holtgetsback) plan on doing but it's not too far off. I found it kind of inspiring myself. If I was smart enough I would probably do it too. Then again, if I was smart enough I could probably make a living as a professional gambler. I'm not quite there yet. If you haven't decided on a place yet I highly recommend Galt's Gulch. You sound like you'd fit in quite well there.

I would suggest selling your house & cars and have both you and your wife retire.. I would then suggest moving to a family friendly community like a nice small town somewhere in the U.S... You can build a debt free self sufficient home and you and your wife can get part time whatever jobs to stay busy and pay for the monthly expenses which should not be much... Living in a small town allows you fresher air and you can grow fresher fruits/veggies which will lead to a healthier life overall...

All the other money you have left over can sit somewhere and build until you need it... Having a job which is your career does not seem neccessarly for you anymore as any more money is just for show and that is not worth a much larger asset which is time... time with your family and friends without stress... With technology advancing this allows you to live in a small town and not miss anything...

English friendly country? WTF does that mean? I think they speak English as an official language in Nigeria and Jamaica. You can live the "simple life" embrace your mud hut, drink goat piss, shit in a hole, fend off the machete gangs, etc.

                                              Most.

                                              Impractical.

                                              Idea.

                                              Ever.

Have a meeting with a real estage agent Thursday and listing my cars sometime this week. Will have passports in 6-8 weeks hopefully.
