More playoff teams in NFL Playoffs

Under the current CBA proposal that NFL owners are pushing for, the playoff field would be expanded to seven teams from each conference, while the regular season would be increased to 17 games per team and the preseason shortened to three games per team, sources said.
As part of the proposed playoff format, only one team from each conference would receive a first-round bye as opposed to the two that currently do, league sources said. That would mean a revised postseason schedule that includes six games on wild-card weekend, with three on Saturday and three on Sunday.

Also the players on teams that earn a first-round bye will receive postseason pay for that weekend. That was not the case under the current CBA, which has always rankled some players.

Owners win, players lose. There's nothing to see here, folks; move along.

How many times over the years have we heard players bitching about how much they hate playing Thursday games? But here they are, apparently ready to keep putting their banged up bodies on the field on a short week. The people who run the NFL are nothing but a bunch of whores; money is all they think about.

Steelers & Rams would have made the playoffs this past season if new format was already in place

Neither team deserved to make the playoffs. Keep it as it is. Couldn't beat the Ravens with everything to for and the Ravens nothing to play for. Playoffs??? Playoffs??? Rams got mauled by 40+ points late in the season. Playoffs?? Playoffs????

Bribing the players with marijuana permission and a bunch of other promises

i think it is nice to give 2 teams in each conference a bye to heal up and such. giving 1 in each is just not enough for the grueling football season.

2 other division winners and 2 wildcards is plenty. why reward more lesser record teams now?

i am for 17 game seasons from a gambling perspective and fan perspective. preseason is almost useless as it is. too many injuries playing the number of preseason games they do.

need to eliminate thursday football games.

weed is a bigger motivator than you think, say 50% of them smoke it, and some regularly, every week,
this is a big deal for them !!! it could be enough to swing the vote + more revs + more retirement + less fines + 1 game off for starters + etc.

they will pass it either this year or next because the younger players are vulnerable to owners, agents, bribes, etc. everything is shady... back door deals... no voting records... etc.

Should just go to 8 team playoffs. The top teams can rest in final week which will become the de facto bye

Do you really think of ALL the players that stay eligible in college ALL of a sudden get addicted to marijuana within days of playing in the NFL?? No way half the league wants another game for some weed. Not enough of them get caught to want it across the board for everyone. For every Josh Gordon there are 500+ who can do without it.

you are crazy if you think the players wouldn’t play another game for a chance to smoke some weed in peace

They are smoking it now. Only the stupid addicted ones are getting caught. Why play another game to help the ones who are addicted and won't be around to play 17 games anyway when the smart ones can smoke it without getting caught. No one wants a team full of Josh Gordons.

The players will obviously reject it. I would say they will have to compromise, maybe 7 teams in the playoffs and 16 game season.

Why would most players care about one fewer preseason game? Most of them aren't playing in them anyway; it's three hours watching guys who are probably getting cut or put on the practice squad. I hope the players reject the offer, but I don't think they're that smart.

It may not be fair to the players, but I’m all for it. And they do make millions of dollars, so I’m not gonna shed a tear for them. Though, it is well deserved for what they put their body, and mind through. I think the league is deep enough, so it is warranted to add another team in each conference. I’d be willing to bet that a 7 seed wins it all in 5-10 years. Yeah, it’s a big range, but team 7 won’t be a squad full of scrubs. Plus, it makes it a bit more fair for when the 6 spot would normally go to whatever tiebreaker rule decides who gets in. But, of course you will still have the 7th-8th spot tied up in some seasons. You can’t complain much though if you didn’t do enough to get yourself in outright.

And I like having only one team get a bye. Sick of the Pats getting a bye, and home field throughout, so they only have to beat the two lowest seeded teams at home to make it to the Super Bowl. Too many cakewalks for the 1 or 2 seed throughout the years. Now only one team will have that advantage, and it will be well earned. Also could make week 17 more important, and not just another bye week for the teams locked into their spot.
