#3Fishing can be a dangerous job, especially in Alaska.. I know this was in Oregon but still. Wouldn't be a job I would choose even as a young man, even though the pay is good.. Crab fishing in Alaska pays very well. It's a few months of living hell though from what I hear...Comment -

It's probably a great career for guys that don't get out of high school and have no future. They make like 150K in a few month's that they work but like you said it's a nightmare when you're gone.Comment -

#7Met a guy who came into my hospital about a month ago. He was a commercial fishermen, and was just passing through town when he started getting violently sick. After some tests, it was determined that he had cancer, and he said "yea I know. I was given 6 months to live and that was 6 months ago."
He left the hospital with the plan to hitch a ride back to wherever home was, so he could get a job fishing. He wanted to die out on the ocean, and it was a race against time as to whether he would make it there and get hired in time. I hope he made it. Those guys are a different breed.Comment -

#8I know Range, I had a buddy that was a surfing friend of mine and he couldn't find a job after college, packed up and did the crab fishing gig in Alaska.. He came back six months later with a ton of cash in his pocket. He said it was hell.. He never went back to Alaska again after that.. He did gut it out though and I commend him for that considering he was born and raised in Malibu, California..Originally posted by RangeFinderJibs,

He's a bit of the earthy type though and was always a tiny bit off socially.. Nice guy though, fit and tall like me. Good looking guy as well just a little awkward though with his personality. Looking back now that's probably why he didn't interview well and get a job back then.. Got desperate and took the Alaska crab fishing job. I lost touch with him today..Comment -

#25Here you go apply.. They'll fly ya out an hire on spot if ya think you can handle it.. Takes a real man, mentally strong with a good immune system and very good health to do it. Helps to be very fit also. Little sleep at times as well you must be able to handle..Originally posted by KiDBaZkiTWould do it in a heartbeat.
Crewmen can earn up to $15,000 per month, or between $20,000 and $50,000, -- or more -- over the course of a three-month season, according to the Alaska Fishing Employment Center. Most also work the spring snow crab fishery as well and many crabbers clear six figures for the year.
