Heard it can be profitable, especially after crowded days at the beach.
Plus, you get lots of walking in.

Bobby, not looking for change, as diamonds, gold, and old relics would take centerstage over pennies and dimes.

I have one. You won't make much money. Any minimum wage job will trump your earnings. It can be a good way to mildly exercise if money is a motivating factor but other physical jobs will do the same and pay better.

You need to get one that is waterproof because most people lose their change in the water and not in the sand.

Fish troops were stationed all over the south. simply find an old campsite.
From Murpheesboro to Shelbyville TN is a real hot spot for civil war relic huniting.
Several people in Shelbyville have become quite wealthy off metal detecting civil war artifacts.
its nothing for these people to find many different items. he has been searching for a couple of weeks for an old campsite in Lincoln Co TN, many have tried to find the site.
of course you cant hunt national parks but you guys have no idea what your talking about.... several hundred thousand troops camped in shelbyville and with land owner permission, you can hunt yourself to death.
he has found several bullets and the buckle just this week.

Seriously, i can't even begin to imagine what you would find at Gettysburg, that place is so massive. It would be something to see somebody with a metal detector in Devil's Den or in the wheat field.

The only metal you will find in private land with a metal detector is lead from the shots being fired at you by the land owner.

pavyracer, that is why you get written permission from the landowner. i know for a fact the legalities of this. if it didnt take too long, i would tell you a story about a couple peices of gold found in a yard last year. the guy hunting had written permission to keep everything he found and he was an attorney....
if you have permission to hunt the land, there is no trouble.
Fish, i was told that you can hunt the rest areas legally.

besides civil war relic hunting..
any old house that once stood during the depression era, that has now crumpled, is subject to having coins or other valuables hidden in the foundation or buried somewhere close by.
banks were not trusted and people did hide money.
Fish you cant hunt this stuff in Fla, come to the rural areas of tenn, ala, georgia and miss...
