How Canada stole the American Dream
The numbers are in. Compared to the U.S., Canadians work less, live longer, enjoy better health and have more sex. And get this: now we're wealthier too.

Good for Canada. Being Canadian it is nice to be liked by most of the world and I am proud to be Canadian.

While a lot of my fellow Canadians find it fashionable to dis the USA wherever possible, I am also mature enough to realize that Canada reaps a lot benefits being located next to the USA. It is what it is.

line from the article: Their armies don't defend just America, they defend freedom.

I'm Canadian but I know one thing: Don't antagonize the guys with the bigger guns. Besides I like Americans. They get a bad rap from the third world rat holes.

                              1. There are 24 teams American teams in the league and 6 Canadian teams (at least 8 if it weren't for Bettman). Besides, over half the players in the league are Canadian and the players winning the Conn Smythes and all the other major awards are Canadian. When is the last time an American won the Art Ross? How many have won the Conn Smythe? What does the US having more NHL teams (including soooo many in markets where they don't belong) have to do with anything? BTW, two of the top 3 wealthiest NHL teams are Canadian (Leafs and Canadiens).

                              2. Baseball team? Is this even a fair comparison? Ok there's 1 baseball team from Canada right now. They've won the World Series 2 times in roughly 35 years of existence (once every 17.5 years) on average. I'd say that is a pretty good rate of success relative to all of the other teams in the league. Plus, for the very few Canadian MLB players there are, they make it make up for the lack of numbers. Gagne (Cy Young), Morneau & Walker (MVPs).

                              3. NBA Championship? Again, there is 1 Canadian NBA team in the league that has been around for only 14 seasons. Is this really a reasonable assessment? Going along the same lines as my baseball argument above, Steve Nash has won the MVP twice, back to back.

                              4. Heavyweight Champion? None here, but there have been good Canadian fighters in other classes. Most people don't know this, but Lennox Lewis grew up in Canada and won a gold medal at the Olympics for Canada. Only after he turned pro did he fight under British citizenship.

                              5. Ok the US won more medals, but who won more gold medals?

                              6. Best sport cricket? Hahah, ok I'm just gonna end this one on a laugh...

That Maclean's article is dead on... numbers don't lie...

SBR John, in all fairness, this is based on what, the opinion on a few hundred Canadians?

The climate thing is always one thing Canada gets criticized on, but when you look at it, all of Canada's major cities are located within 150 km of the US border, meaning that would make the weather "American". Toronto, where' I'm from, gets same the winter weather patterns as NYC, Washington, Boston and Philadelphia. Actually, Buffalo seems to always get paralyzed with snow every winter that, for some reason, doesn't seem to reach us.

                                Just my two cents.

I lived minutes from the border in Buffalo years ago. Before Homeland Security etc, I could drive over for a lunch, fill up my gas tank (during the late 70's it was cheap, exchange and all) and be back in an hour. Interesting strip clubs, great beer and the border inspectors laughed when you were coming back over with booze on your breath late at night, never seen a cop.

Ft. Erie RaceTrack was the only TBred track within 100 miles. They used to have a great meet in the summer, also many people had cottages on the lake for relaxing. That was a while ago, now it's 3 hours to get over the border at times. The track is a racino now, no surprise.

Canada is a pretty place and I'd like to go there one day. But it's cold all the time, the beer sucks, and everyone is pale.
