.... and Pacquaio/Mayweather would not revive boxing. Boxing needs at least 2-5 legitimate Heavyweights. They have none.Comment -

Boxing didn't have to go this way, a few corrupt and ignorant people sabotaged the sport. Boxing, RIP.Comment -

If he wins the Super 6 as I think he will he he's looking at potential superfights with Lucian Bute and Chad Dawson. If he meets those challenges he could easily have the same sort of starpower that a guy like Mayweather has now.Comment -

Nobody says that people can't watch both golf and tennis, or both football and hockey. I just don't buy the claim that people won't watch both MMA and boxing.Comment -

so about less than 40% of the record boxing total? I think the most important measures are prob pay per view ratings. and ratings of boxing and MMA that is on regular cableComment -

#23approaching 20years of PPV coverage of the sport(unless it disappears in 3 years) and just within the past couple years deals have been made with CBS, VS and now ESPN(espn actually broadcast some of the UFC events for other countries, but just does news/highlights for USA)

As far as talent goes. Boxing and MMA require totally different skill sets. Don Frye is a MMA legend, but was a complete tomato can of a boxer. Successful boxers like Ray Mercer got destroyed in MMA. According to conventional wisdom, if any sport takes talent away from boxing it's basketball, and the popularity of basketball is nothing new.Comment -

#29Originally posted by Tree RollinsThe most talented fighters of every skill set will gravitate toward mma. The best punchers, athletes, athletes, whatever. Basically, if a guy is going to go into fighting, he's probably going to train for MMA. Of course there will be exceptions, but why would a talented young fighter want to box these days?
I would much rather fight in a sport that would allow me hundreds of opportunities to fight for money rather than a sport where you fight 25 fights and retire.
The lack of money making opportunities combined with the much greater amount of abuse that MMA fighters submit themselves to make boxing a much more intelligent decision long term, although MMA fighters are not known for being very bright.
How many MMA fighters are multi millionaires?????Comment -

There a quite a few multimillionaires in MMA and the paydays will keep going up. Even mid-level guys are getting good name recognition and making money off endorsements and promotions. In boxing, no one even watches the undercards, and 99% of people have never heard of anyone on the undercard and never will. At this point, if you're a talented young fighter, and you decide to become a boxer over a mixed martial artist, you're probably an idiot.Comment -

#31ShCat, The facts are that boxing is struggling to exist and most people just flat out don't give a shit about it. There is literally 1 boxing match that your average fight fan would go out of their way to see. Most fight cans can't name half the different sanctioning organizations or probably even a quarter of the dozens of random title holders. To be a champion in boxing is becoming almost meaningless. I like boxing, but everyone knows it's being passed by MMA. It's common knowledge at this point.
Fights like last night just push more and more people away.Comment -

#32The biggest prize payout in the MMA to date was $400,000 awarded to Brock lessnar.
Top boxers earn a payday in the millions per fight, with top fighters like Mayweather, Tyson, and De La Hoya earning up to 20-30 million per fight.
Boxing is a far less brutal sport and far less abusive to the body clearly any body who would put their body through the MMA type of abuse for a payout 75% less than fighters in their class in boxing would clearly (not probably) be the idiot.Comment -

#34I also enjoy MMA, but you are asking why a talented fighter would choose to follow a boxing career over an MMA career and there is no question about it that boxers not only earn far more per fight but also have 4 times the amount of opportunities throughout their career to fight for money. MMA fighters fight on average 25 fights before they are done whereas boxers fight 100 on the average, that is 75 more opportunities to earn a payday with a 75% better payout.
You do not need an MIT degree to figure out which sport you will make more money in!!!!Comment -
