Just saw it on TV..........that was fvckin brutal, looks like the steel beams being so close to the track should of been protected by some sort of soft material.
Poor guy died a Star Trek death..........Beam me up Scotty.

I don't think soft padding around a beam matters when you hit it at 140km hour.....

Interesting story though from the NY Times on how Canada didn't allow other countries to practice at olympic sites so they could gain a better advantage over other countries. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/21/sp...pics.html?_r=1
you are mistaken. host countries do not of the option of allowing or disallowing

Maybe not, but i know if i was in a car going 140Km per hour i would rather get hit in the head with an air bag as opposed to a steering wheel or the dash, increases your chances of survival as would of a plush material wrapped around that steel beam.

Host countries can control how many times you are allowed to practice at the sites. A part of the article shows it below:
A decades-old open-access agreement between the luge teams of the United States and Canada has come undone. Americans said that most Canadian athletes took 60 to 100 extra practice runs in Utah before the 2002 Salt Lake Games. Canada offered the United States 18 this time, in a trade for 18 Canadian runs at this year’s world championships in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Americans refused.
“I guess I can intellectually say I understand it,” said Ron Rossi, the executive director of USA Luge, upset that a gentlemen’s agreement dating to the 1980 Lake Placid Games has ended. “But as an honorable thing, I don’t support it, and I think it shows a lack of sportsmanship.”
Last winter, speedskaters from several countries were denied access to the Richmond Olympic Oval, Canadian officials said, because they did not make proper arrangements and because of a last-minute decision to shut the site to add lighting. A German team spent days waiting to be allowed in. Kevin Crockett, a Canadian Olympic medalist now coaching for China, was among those who went in, only to be escorted out. The conflict and confusion made headlines in Canada.

i am absolutely appalled at the design of this track it is a tragedy waiting to happen which already did
they should prosecute the fukin retard for manslaughter for this shocking design, a five year can see a wall should have been erected
he would have bounced off the wall back onto the track and slid, maybe some broken bones

i dont know why. but i just can't enjoy these olympics now. i feel like canada's let me down. i just can't get into the big opening ceremony party. it's like there's a big cloud over the whole thing now. very disappointed in my country at this point, especially including the whole attitude towards these games in which we feel like we're supposed to dominate and will do anything to.

Imagine a car with seat belt, airbags and bumpers hitting a wall at 90 mph. Now imagine someone on a skateboard without a seatbelt, airbags and bumper hitting a wall at 90 mph. Do you think a wall would have saved his life?

I was just going to say. By the erect a wall logic all we have to do is put up walls and pads in every impact scenario and voila impact deaths solved. Maybe the inside of our cars should have a clear padding so we can see out but will be completely safe in the case of an impact.

I have just read the police report and they said there is nothing wrong with the track. Apparently the guy was inexperienced and not familiar with the track and took the last turn too late and too fast resulting in losing control. The only way to avoid this type of accident is to make the lugers wear full body suits and helmets, put 2 feet of padding on both sides of track in enclosed walls. But then the track becomes a tunnel and the lugers weigh too much and lose all the drag from the heavy body suits.
My point is if you try to increase safety you lose the speed and this is why people watch luge. No one wants to see slow moving luges going through heavily padded tunnels. Maybe what needs to be done is testing of the track by the athletes before the olympics on a trial event to increase experience of lugers.

Joseph Fendt, the president of the World Luge Federation, said: “The track is too fast. We had planned it to be a maximum of 137 kmh (85mph) but it is about 20kmh faster. We think this is a planning mistake.”

Yeah I just watched the reports up here about it.
The president of the International Luge Federation (hilarious name btw), but he said the track was way too fast and he's very worried.
They showed the countless crashes and injuries sustained by other athletes on it in the past year. Some began praying on the way down because they thought they weren't gonna make it. A veteran bobsledder flipped his 2 man bobsled after not crashing anywhere for 8 years!
An american luger in 2007 tried out the track and said "It is way too fast. Someone's going to die on this damned thing"
I know hindsight is 20/20, but I do think it was built terribly and there were plenty of warning signs, but nothing was done to fix it.
