I'm sure there will be considerations of having this event banned from future Olympics. But all they need to do is have higher walls or a large tunnel or netting of sorts after the huge turns. The design of the track is more at fault then the beam being there.

The steel columns are supporting the canopy above the luge track. They are so close to the track. Even if they were located further to the right of the screen and the canopy was cantilevered what stops a flying luger from flying over the track? If there was netting between the columns wouldn't that decapitate the luger on impact going 100 mph? If there was a wall he would have crashed his skull like the steel column did.
