The San Diego Padres have acquired left fielder Justin Upton from the Atlanta Braves, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney and Jerry Crasnick.
Other details of the deal were not immediately available on Friday.
Upton will join a Padres outfield that includes slugger Matt Kemp, acquired this month in a five-player trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kemp was the first of a few big deals by new Padres general manager A.J. Preller, who also has added outfielder Wil Myers, the 2013 AL Rookie of the Year, from Tampa Bay and All-Star catcher Derek Norris from Oakland.
Upton hit .270 for Atlanta in 2014, collecting 29 home runs and 102 RBIs.
The 27-year-old will make $14.5 million in 2015 and is set for free agency in 2016.

I'm surprised they didn't move the fences in this year.

as a lifelong Padres fan, I'm fired up with all these trades! I don't love every trade we have made this offseason, but the offense will be a lot more potent. This is the most excited I've been in a longtime about baseball starting.

The GM AJ Preller that made all of these moves will be out of baseball in 2 yrs time. On the surface the moves look exciting and appear to improve the team. Nobody takes into consideration what the Pads lost and also that all of these "upgrades" are defensively challenged. Which accounts for more value now than ever post steroids era. Believe it or not they are not moving the needle much here and to have lost Jesse Hahn to Oakland? Pads new GM just made several trade moves with some of the brightest most experienced minds in baseball in the Dodgers new regime of Friedman and Zaidi, Oakland's Billy Beane, TB Silverman, which he is no slouch, and last but not least, Atlanta's John Hart.
Upton is just a rental? Kemp a big bat in decline is atrocious in OF, and seriously the Rays were willing to move Myers after a rookie of the year 2013? All 3 of these players at their best are huge K's Hr's and poor defense.
That new GM just went "all in" with these moves and did so trading against some of the brightest baseball people in the business. Talk about jumping into the deep end just starting a new job....
Good thing is this will def drive season ticket sales. Bad thing is the team will still be sucking hind tit. Too many liabilities defensively and health wise.

Padres kept many of their top shelf prospects despite all the trades...Wisler, hedges and Renfroe.

I think the bottom line was selling tickets & that team needed offense. They weren't going to get past SF or LA with that Pony League offense. Dead last in runs, don't see how you're not excited if you like the Pads. Pitching was already solid, so now they potentially get into the wildcard mix if guys perform.

Padres always have a decent to very good pitching staff so all this added offense is great. Historically, the Padres have been terrible at developing position players and very good with pitchers. Hopefully this is one of the things that Preller will address in the minor league system.

you sir are a fukkin idiot. You don't have the slightest fukkin clue.
These moves are excellent for everyone involved. You cant always live for tomorrow.
Tomorrow may never come. If you are not going into the season with the mindset we are going after a world series ring then GET THE FUKK OUT OF BASEBALL

Hardly... You do not understand or know all the particulars involved in these moves. You see Matt Kemp and think STAR! For as good as his bat is his below average defense subtracts from that. Besides he is now on the wrong side of 30 and has major injury concerns with 2 arthritic hips now to boot. The Dodgers readily shipped him and 32M to the Pads? Cause for concern maybe?
Justin Upton 1 year rental. High impact bat and is a strike out machine like Kemp. Poor defender like Kemp also. Produces great numbers but does so in a streaky way. He will carry the team for weeks at a time and be completely worthless other long stretches. Not consistent at all. Also the haul Pads gave up was significant for a rental. Check Fangraphs prospect analysis. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/break...n-upton-trade/
Will Myers trade: Rookie of the year 2013 and fell off 2014 with injury and concerns over work ethic after admitting after winning rookie of the year he felt he had arrived and slacked off in off season. All kinds of data showing huge regression in 2014. Friedman left the Rays but it has been know for some time they have one of the brightest baseball operation staff's in the game. Why would they sell low? Cause for concern? Anyways if you look at the 3 team trade that netted the Pads Myers its clear to most Wash won it but I would argue TB won it. No matter how you look at it Pads didn't win it.
Derek Norris trade: Nice hitting defensively challenged catcher that kills LHP. Probably platoons at 1B. But to give up Jesse Hahn for that? Of course you probably never heard of Jesse Hahn like most.
Will Middle brooks at 3B?
This Pads team will lead the league in defensive runs lost and I question the strength of those players power and how it plays in that ball park all in an effort to finish in 3rd place again in the NL West.
The new GM just went all in with defensively challenged players like it's 1994 all over again in hopes of out slugging teams when the Royals and Giants just showed in the post season the game has changed... AND he make these moves trading against some of the smartest baseball people in the business.
Yeah, I think I have a clue....
I agree upgrades were needed offensively but most of these moves are reckless and wreaks of a rookie GM

No, because 80 probably isn't a fair market price.
I will bet them under whatever their season total is though.
