ya that type of play drives me nuts. That is why I don't root for Italy when they are in the tournament. If they get a lead, then they do exactly what England did. I know it happens in other sports. Take the NHL for example. Ya, you are up late and you play D and it doesn't always work out, but the other team pulls their goalie so you have to play D. How many times have you seen a 2 or 3 goal lead in the 2nd period and they stop doing what got them the lead in the first place, and eventually they blow it. Happens all the time. That's why they say a 2-0 lead in hockey is the worst lead to have.
Back to soccer, today, England went into a defensive shell immediately after going up a goal with a half hour left. That's a long time. Ya maybe play a little more cautious, I get it. They went too extreme and completely stopped playing. They were asking to lose. They got their wish. It's a shame.
I didn't mind Argentina winning because we get to see one of the greatest players one final time again, but I would have liked to see England make it back to the final. It's a shame that the country the invented soccer doesn't play in the championship very often.Comment -

As for the ENG game, I think about Intl soccer as a cultural thing. Teams really don't change that much over time.
1) Only a handful of teams have won a World Cup. Soccer's place in culture is consistent.
2) After Team USA wins a game or two, media pundits talk about winning the World Cup. No way, it's not in American DNA.
3) ENG won on home-soil in 1966. Think about all the frustration since then. This was a good ENG team, but I'd argue that they have a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses as the prior teams:
a) EPL is a top league. English players have talked about chopping down a guy in EPL and then having same guy as teammate.
b) It's long been said that English players get over-rated. Most of the beat writers are English, so players get over-hyped.
c) Tactically, I do think there's a different mentality with other countries. English players are mostly programmed to attack. I feel like they struggle to adjust to different tactics.Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?Comment -
