I am merely disappointed that I will no longer be able to go to Taproom Tuesdays. I really enjoyed that event. And there are some friends that I hardly ever see except there. Oh well, I'll have to make more of an effort to see them elsewhere.

Tips expected is part of their salary, that's why they have to report them on taxes as "salary". .

Good point. Not to mention that in most restaurants it is policy for the servers to "tip out" the bartenders and bussers (sometimes even kitchen staff). The cumulative amount of tip outs are generally 3-4% of a server's total sales. Therefore if the asshole who penned this original post has a $100 tab, the server who tended to his needs is required to pay out $3-4 to fellow employees. That server is still responsible for the entire $100 tab.


In essence, when you stiff a server you not only deprive them the chance of waiting on somebody with class who will pay for the service provided (opportunity cost); but you also have caused them to pay a portion of your bill.

First off, Why the hell would you not tip some hard working person whom is providing a service for you. These people get a lower wage per hour then any one else in the wolrld. Tips are an important part of the pay scale for them.

There are some places that will include a 15% "tip" in the final bill.

Why does nobody address the backwards laws in these states that think it's okay to pay people $3/hour because social customs engender the clientele to leave charity for them? Can't we just pay people fairly and take the discretion out of it?

Too many laws in this country already. Why not allow a guy to guarantee his staff nothing and let them work solely for tips, and allow the next guy to pay his staff $27.50 an hour and not allow tipping?

Depends on the level of service, I use 10 percent as a baseline (minimum wage is much higher in the UK).
I leave no tip if the service is poor, maybe as much as 30 percent if it is exceptional.

Bullshit...I had the worst service ever at a restaurant on the Vegas strip yesterday. After the check came and I was about to leave a 3% tip, I notice 18% gratuity included, and a line for additional tip. Motherfukkers. No wonder it was so lousy.

Couldn't agree more. Those people earn their living from tips and bust their asses much harder than I'm sure you ever have in any job. Sure, it's not brain surgery, but they work hard to provide you with a service.

One might say the reverse is true: People that work for tips and don't understand that not everyone either tips as much as you or even tips at all is just a naive little cock sucker.

We've had these tip discussions before and everyone seems to think their notion of what is right and wrong, what percentage of the total bill should be left for a tip, is the only way. If a bar/cafe owner feels that ALL patrons should tip a certain percent, then either hang a big sign saying it's a requirement or simply up the cost of their goods x-percent and hang a sign saying no tipping is necessary.

When I look at a receipt:

I view the total bill.

In the Tip Area: I usually write.. a team name and the spread.. ex. Colts -3

Obviously the pick wins every time and this way to waiter gets to pick his own tip.
