are these things dangerous? My dad told me many horror stories about them at Christmas, I don't like renters using them. But now I'm really paranoid.

#4but I think that the new stuff- last 5-10 years is safe- but I think some people still have heaters from 20 years ago. I think it is the old electrical outlets and wiring in these old places that are more susceptible to starting fires with all the power these things pullComment -

#5I use a torpedo heater at work ( the ones that look like a jet engine)
350,000 BTU, heats up an empty house in a manner of minutes
older models tend to shoot flames once they get worn out
maybe you should install central heat/air in your units thanComment -

#6The problem with them is people's stupidity. All it takes for a fire to start is for an idiot to pass out and throw his blanket or clothes on it and it starts a fire. They are safe if used properly.Comment -

#13when i was growing up we used kerosene heaters in the house and we never had problems. i've also used the little electrical heaters in my bedrooms in the past when i rented or shared a shabby place with friends.
As long as you use common sense with them you shouldn't have problems.Comment -

#14I've used space heaters in my art 'n gambling studio for years and never had a problem. Could not live without them. I have a new one from SoleUSAir that uses 400/800 watts instead of the standard 750/1500 and it provides just as much heat as the older ones. All electrical space heaters now have tip over cut off and other safety features. The only way you get in trouble is draping stuff right on top of the heater, and if you do that you're a moron and deserve to have a fire.
Though I have warmed up my socks that way on a cold night. Toasty warm!Comment -

#15If you're a landlord and tenants are using them, you should make sure they are all modern heaters. Tenants can be pretty dumb and won't give a rat's ass if they burn down your building.Comment -

#21You don't have to worry about fires...
The biggest thing is that they have a tendency to trip the circuit breaker if there is other stuff on there.
I used to manage an office building and we confiscated every one of those fukkin things because they kept tripping the breakers. We never worried about fires, though, so you should be fine unless you're making kerosene smores with fukkin nitroglycerin graham crackers.
Be careful with this if that's the route you're taking.Comment -

#25Chi one thing that was briefly touched on but is very important is the electrical element of these. Even if you have a relatively modern and safe one you should press with your tenants to have an outlet just for the heater. My friend that I live with when I'm not at school had a huge fire from one of these.
Not from overheating, not from abuse, not from clothes on it. But the physical socket burnt up and ignited.
Just be observent.Comment -

#32That video is a crock of shit. NO WAY that blanket catches on fire unless it was draped over that heater or within 2 or 3 inches of it, unless that heater was putting out ungodly BTU. Even then.... Unbelievable BS from safety morons. It's a disservice to people who are considering space heaters as a cost-efficient heating source for their home.Comment -
