LA Times writer Says Legalize SportsBooks
Read this article a little while back and thought the writer made very valid points about why sports wagering should be legalized in the recession with all these municipalities and states suffering budget crises...I agree completely with what he's saying...Wondering what the great philosophical thinkers of the SBR forum thinks about legalized books pro con

"Think about it. By many estimates Americans spend at least $100 billion each year betting on sports. One hundred billion, at least -- only a sliver of which is wagered aboveboard, through Nevada's professionalized network of casinos and bookies.

Our beleaguered local and federal governments can't afford to be stepping from the action anymore. They should be doing what many other countries are: overseeing sports gambling, taxing it, professionalizing its middlemen, and letting us legally play at casinos and as they do all over cities such as London, through Bookmakers and betting shops."

Where does that $100billion figure come from, thin air?

Good article. Thanks for posting that.

Unfortunately, I'd say legalized sports betting in the USA is a long ways away.

Perhaps so but when a very large chunk of refinanced commercial real estate notes start coming due in 2010 there is going to be even less and less money for cities and states as real estate values continue the downward trend...Treasury and the Fed can't keep printing money like it's going out of style...Gold closing at 1053 an ounce yow...There has to be alternatives...Or EVERYONE will suffer..

Another question is do the offshore books prefer things as they are; Status Quo or they for Legalized Books. If the books are for the Legalization would they lobby Congress if things got worse financially stating the same rationale as the writer cites in the article...all very interesting....
